What would be benificial to have using a Mac + Final Cut for HVX footage?

Do i need P2 Log Software or the P2 Genie or any other sort of software?

Thanks!

Make sure you use FCP 5.1.4, the are some nasty problems with earlier versions. Of the earlier versions, FCP 5.1.1 appears to be the most stable, but it doesn't have the nice P2 Import feature of FCP 5.1.2.

It depends on your workflow and what you want to accomplish. FCP does indeed have improved P2 compatibility, but it doesn't have features like Genie's ability to do auto-unloads. Likewise, FCP doesn't have repair features, printing, or cross file XML searches like P2 Log Pro.

Many people buy Genie to avoid the "overhead" of running an editor in the field if all they want is to cycle those cards quickly.

Likewise, many people run P2 Log for QC checks after the transfers because it's simple, to the point, and will run on virtually any Mac with OSX 10.4 whereas FCP of course requires the more expensive graphics cards.

[There's a reason Panny drug 10 copies of P2 Log Pro off to Alaska for the Iditarod ...]

Easy workflow, and Damn I love FCP, I find something new everytime I use it, and it's great.

No, No, and No.

When I got my HVX, I bought a Mac Pro also (no special video card). I just hook up the firewire and import directly into FCP. If I want to archive, I just copy those imported clips to DVD's (they have a quicktime wrapper on them so once they are imported and wrapped, you don't need anything else to bring them back into FCP.
