HVX/M2 Feature Still Grabs..

I'll toss in my two pense..

Now what is too much? These days it coems down to eprsonal prefference and your own style so that being said..

The first shot of the city.. I mean it is Miami, and Miami thanks to Michael Bay and old school Miami Vice is warm.. but man, thats reaaalllly warm. Again though.. personal prefference.

I remmeber certain shots from the trailer you had up for a short while. I really liked the CC on the girl at the shower, and the opening sequence with sot of a bronzed hugh. From the stills you put up thats gone now.. a shame, that was really nice (stood out to Lenny as well)

The curly haired guy.. the purple is a bit strong.. pull back the blues, maybe let a little of the skintone peak through. Maybe just desaturate rather then boosting the blues.. Draw out the colors and just have sort of a blur tone to it.

Some of the others its hard to say.. when the image is darker save for the subject its hard to to say one way or the other.. does not look bad though. CC is ofcourse and artistic tool like anything else.. meant to further the story. The filmmakers know that better then the few who just look at the stills so.. Our opinions may not fit the big picture.

Finally the last shot of the girl.. very nice! Warm but not to much, strong skin tones, a very nice feel.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more.

Impressions:

Shot 1-Too warm. I love the orange filter as much as the next guy but DAMN!!! You gotta tone that down a bit. It looks like you just cut out an entirly channle worth of stuff which would explain the lack in detail.

Shot 2-Very nice. Love the colors and lighting.

Shot 3-Not bad. Flair is a bit much.

Shot 4-Good control of lighting but I'm seeing a lot of aliasing on the girl's face. Was this an issue on export?

Shot 5-Meh

Shot 6-Crush your blacks. The flair and lighting look nice but your blacks are WAY too milky.

Shot 7-A bit purple but it works.

Shot 8-Very nice.

Shot 9-Not bad.

Shot 10-Nice.

Shot 11-Meh

Shot 12-Very nice. Like the desaturation.

Shot 13-Very surreal looking. I like it.

Shot 14-Good. Nice blacks.

Shot 15-Ditto.

Shot 16-Very nice. See, now that's an acceptible amount of warming (barely).

My comments are in bold..

Hahah, yeah.. I kinda just did that for the still.. It's going to be on our movie poster..

Gotcha.. was playing with a little de-sat..

It's amazing how different things look on other peoples computers.. on my mac in FCP it looked great.. now on my pc it looks way purple. I need a realy monitor to do my CC

True.. but I want ideas..

It's a music video.. within the movie.. it works in context.. but yes, its alot! haha but when he blocks the light, its really nice..

Shot 4-Good control of lighting but I'm seeing a lot of aliasing on the girl's face. Was this an issue on export?

Yes.. must be the export.. it's a clean shot..

Shot 5-Meh

I love this shot :-)

Shot 6-Crush your blacks. The flair and lighting look nice but your blacks are WAY too milky.

I should have pulled a grab without ALL the flares.. when he blocks the light it's really crushed..

Shot 7-A bit purple but it works.

Shot 10-Nice.

Shot 11-Meh

His of course, but he's asking for reactions and I'm giving him my most honest impressions.

Perhaps I should clarify some of the more vague ones.

Nice=Shot looks good. Can't articulate exactly why I like it but it looks pleasing.

Meh=Shot looks decent but not great. Can't quite put my finger on why it doesn't look quite as nice as the other ones. Not bad per say but not up to the quality of the better ones.

The first and last shot do seem a bit much... but again it depends upon the context of the film... I battle with what's going to look natural.. and appropriate while also maintaining a personal style.

Other than those.. looks sweet! Love the blue hallway shot for sure

Unlike a lot of people that post here, I'm not looking for people to blow smoke up my ass.. I don't find that very useful.. I post what I want comments on.. The good, the bad and the UGLY!
Thats what I want..
I love the good comments, but I don't get anything from them.. I'm here to learn boys, and I have learned so much!!

Thanks for ALL your comments.. please keep them coming..

My thoughts are

I have no idea in what context these grabs are. The 1st one is warm as hell; but is this an opening title sequence ? A tranny shot ? an Est shot ?

Without context how can i pass judegment ? They all look great. Certainly not too warm, or too flairy ....

They all have wonderful exposure and comps; they look great

Have some clips ?

Without a context it can be difficult to judge, as color grading plays a big role in any movie, it sets the mood. So the question really is: does you choice of colors help tell the story? and is it consistent throughout the film? Does it help define the characters? From what I see so far, you have many different tones. I am not saying it's a bad thing, it is sometime use, for example, to set apart different time frame, for a flash back, or to set apart different group of people, but in most cases the color of a film is consistent throughout.

There's some great stuff here, I agree that the first image seems a big orange for me and that the flare shots might need to have the black levels crushed.

I also agree that seeing them in context is important to color correction.

With that said you've got great shots to work with.

chris

True about the context.. David, the first shot will serve as a part of our poster.. I doubt it will stay that way for the film.. Tranny..hahahaha took me a bit to get that one..

I posted a short rought trailer awhile ago, but we took it down for a few reasons.. One, we have an interested party that has already offered $$ for it?? Where not even done editing! and the cut was BAD! We'll have one up by the end of the month..

Thanks again guys!

so stoked on this one..... love it
