HVX Keeps falling out of focus

With HVX set to auto, it still keeps falling out of FOCUS and I have to then manually adjust it. I have switched the iris switch to manual and the secondary switch which sets the camera in auto mode but it keeps happening.

any ideas.

auto focus hunts for focus. all autofous systems do that to a degree.

use manual focus when possible.

Auto focus is not ideal for any video camera...It will always be searching for something to focus on.

Use manual with focus assist for better results.

Thanks gentlemen but when I used the DVX it always worked perfectly especially because I am always shooting on the fly and very rarely have time to stop and focus in on the action.

It was really problematic when I was shooting at a concert.

you're shooting HD now.... so focus is critical. ON DV you can set your focus just about anywhere and never have to tweek it.. On HD.. you have to be precise as there's more pixels to show where it's soft.. and focus assist is necessary in the beginning. I rarely use mine now as I can tell when I'm soft or not..

Auto focus is terrible on the HVX and it jumps so bad.. impossible to use for pro stuff.

yea does your auto focus jump like crazy? like mine goes from MF19 to MF97 and back like 10 times a second.....

my autofocus doesn't go too crazy but I don't use it anymore at all. I can adjust focus faster than the auto does and it drives me crazy when I'm shooting and it goes out of focus and I'm not the one doing it.

What do you cats use for monitors while shooting on HD? I'm going to be doing a ton of handheld and Im gonna be changing the focus all the time. Is there such a thing as an HD montor that will fit on my camera that wont embarass my piggybank???

I have been struggling with the HVX autofocus some myself. Flying it from a helicam with a DV downlink I don't have much choice at the moment. I have found (as Barry states in the book) that it does work a bit better at higher frame rates, higher shutter speeds, with plenty of light and when the scene has ample contrast. At 24 - 30 frames its just about hopeless.
