HVX/HPX S-Video Out 200 ft. to Switcher

Hey, Gang...

Questions first....background following for those interested.

Q1: Can I successfully feed live footage via S-Video out on HVX200A and HPX170 to Panny WJ-MX50 that is 200 ft. away to provide a 2 camera angle shoot for customer to encode and stream using 480i SD?

Q2: Any comments or recommendations given the scenario below?

BG: This coming Thursday I have been asked to provide (2) cameras to shoot (not record) a panel of 12 people for a 2 hour discussion that will be fed to a switcher and then to the Dept. of Education's encoding/streaming setup for nationwide delivery on their systems and also to various web sites. I have nothing to do with the encoding, streaming or web delivery part of the project. The client has informed me that their encoding system cannot accept HD or progressive footage and simply needs an analog SD stream via s-video or composite. The client IT department will operate the MX50 and I will install preview monitors on it so they can switch on the fly between the two camera angles. If I locate the cameras up in the press box of the auditorium where the event will be held I will be restricted to a very wide angle view and lack of detail. By being up front near the panel, I can achieve better closeup detail which is required to follow and frame the persons speaking as well as the moderator who will be up on stage and moving around (but hence the long cable run to the switcher).

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

From what I have read concering S Video it seems that the max transmission distance is 100'-150' depending on the quality of cabling that is used. A while ago I purchased a pair of S Video to Cat 5 baluns made by Muxlab in order to send S Video over 300' from a laptop to a projector. It worked flawlessly for that project, though I have never tried to use it from the camera to a monitor. Another big advantage is the relatively low price of Cat 5 cable. Here is a link to the baluns I have, though they also make baluns that will transmit audio in addition to the video signal, http://www.muxlab.com/products/ve_svd_s-v_balun.html

Thanks, frijoleros...
These look pretty nice (and passive too). I'm working on having the client relocate the camera risers closer to reduce distance, but I think I'll order a few of these and give them a shot.

hmmm....just found out the HPX170 doesn't have S-Video out, only on the HVX. Now I'm down to using the yellow RCA for that.

Does that mixer have RCA video in's. Even if it does it's going to be incredibly poor quality. You would be better served to rent another HVX and charge it back to your client so you can have the S-video option. You can do that or rent a converter box that would allow you to convert the SDI signal coming out of the HPX.

Hi, Jim..
Yes the Switcher has both s-video and BNC input ( I will need to use RCA-BNC adapter). This project is destined for chaos from the beginning, but the customer is begging me to do it to avoid him from using a webcam from 200 feet away ...imagine that !
I have a meeting tomorrow at the location and will have a better feel for whether or not I can get the cams closer to the control room.

200 feet of cable is 200 feet even if you are 3 feet from the devices that are plugged into each other. If you have access to the cable you can try it ahead of time and see if it work good enough for your needs. The great thing about analog signal is they have more then a "on or off" option. Meaning you may lose some image quality but it may be good enough for the web streaming. I just look on Radio Shacks website and they do not stock it any more, but their $40 distribution amplifier is a great in between for SD signals. You can run 100ft of S-Video or Composite into amp then run another 100ft with very little "naked eye" loss. The meters might tell you different but it looks pretty darn good. Also the mixer can effectively do the same thing. You can run 100ft to mixer in the middle then run 100ft to streaming computer. Good Luck!

Just an update: I was able to get client to move encoding system behind the stage I will be shooting on so now the distance from my cameras to the switcher is 50 ft. The encoder will be fed directly from the switcher with a 3 ft. S-Video cable. Just ordered some Pearson 50 ft. S-Video and Composite cables to be shipped overnight. I'll let you all know how it turns out. Thanks for the help.
