HVX frustration

Well, the HVX pic is VERY underexposed. But there's still more detail and less noise in it than in the DVX pic.

Thanks David. Yeah, it's dark test footage that I took with the HVX. I've just seen a lot of test footage from the HVX here and on youtube, and some are similar in that they are shot dark, without great lighting, but I could still tell a noticeable difference from the DVX. More so than I can tell here, so that's why I was unsure.

The underexposure will kill your image, kill it dead. Scene file settings can make a huge difference also. I don't know what the stock HVX scene files are like, but it is worth a review since it can make a huge difference in noise, color, detail, contrast, etc.

When you say underexposed, are you talking about it just being dark? The lighting where I shot this wasn't great, but I thought it would be good enough to get an idea.

The complexities of dealing with the the HVX footage in post, i.e needing a super strong computer to handle it, needing raylight for it to work in Vegas, card readers or adapters to offload in the field and the question of how much better it will really even be on an SD DVD compared to the DVX, has me to where I'm probably just going to go back to the DVX for awhile longer. I really like the DVX itself and how easy it is to work with in Vegas.

Well, I would need to get a more powerful computer to handle the size of the HVX footage, otherwise, it's not the problem of once I have it in Vegas, it's the problems of getting it to Vegas in the first place. Combined, it's needing a new computer, new raylight software, a card reader or adaptor for when my p2 cards are full on location. And by the way, does the HVX footage ever show as thumbnails the way DVX footage is shown when it's captured? Or do you have to convert it to AVI for that? . . . Anyhow, the process of getting footage from the p2 to vegas is just a lot of extra expense and I'm not seeing a big enough difference in image to justify it all right now.

My recommendation is to setup a tripod outside and record the same image, settings and focal length. If you do not see how much better the HVX is compared to DVX you are doing something wrong. I loved my DVX and it was a really tough decision to sell it but my HVX captures very noticeably better images.
