You could win a BRAND NEW CAR!
Okay, not really. But you could get my ass out of a sling. I have a shoot w/ the HVX in oh, 36 hours or so. A doc shoot. Meaning long interviews- 3 hrs for the day, I'm guessing. Client really wants a tape in hand on the plane. That's what he's familiar and comfortable with. I don't necessarily blame him. He has an Avid NLE, so if I hand him a hard drive, I want to make sure that those files are something he can easily work with (QT vs. MXF).
Trying desperately to decide upon the smartest workflow. You help me, and I speak in hushed tones of reverence about your name. Maybe a t-shirt with your name on it.
On second thought, maybe not.
Here goes.
For this shoot, I'm probably going to: (unless you have a better idea)
1: Hotswapping 2 8gig P2 cards into a P2 Store, then dumping the P2 store to my computer at lunch. Trying to get another P2 Store and another card. That would help.
Possible problems and questions:
Dumping P2 cards onto a P2 Store takes much more time than I anticipated, as I checked it out at the rental house.
Q: How much time for per each 8gig card? I'm thinking I should shoot at 720/30PN to double my shooting time per card, so I have a bigger time buffer to yank the card out of the camera and place it into the P2 store. Ideally, I'd do this between takes, but I'm not going to stop someone speaking if they're on a roll- which brings up the question of shaking the camera during this process. I'm on a Sachtler 18, but still...
And, as a card carrying paranoid, I was thinking about backing up via streaming to FCP 4.5 on my G5 live. I was able to stream live in 720/60p and 30p, but didn't try 30PN. (oddly, FCP 4.5 played back capture nicely in the viewer, but needed rendering in the timeline in 30p. 60p footage didn't have that issue.)
Q: Is this plan the product of a very sick, paranoid mind?
Ok, next: Reality or Myth?
Q: If I shoot 30P Native, can I output to HD DVCPro tape just as easily as if I shot non-native? Will that tape be just as useful or will it require sacrificial rooster blood sprinkled on it to make it work for the editor? The short of it: Is HD DVCPro tape laid down the same, no matter what format you shoot? ie, 720/24p vs. 1080/60i vs 720/30PN?
What's the difference between
shooting 720/60p at 30fps
and
shooting 720/30p (non-native)
Are they the same?
What's the determinant for happy timelines?
Is it that everything must be the same vertical resolution, ie 720 vs 1080?
or
is it actual captured frames, ie 30PN vs 24P,
or
is it actual frame rates within the format? ie 720/60P @24fps vs 720/60P @30fps
Next: Am I just a dumb-ass who should have read a very Obvious FAQ somewhere, but was too friggin' fried from pre-pro to do it. Or maybe just lazy. Maybe.
Okay, one more: Shooting 720/60P @30fps, and say, after the fact- in post- I decide, "hmm. Sure would be nice to slow this down abit..." Is it possible to discard the frame flagging that marks the 30fps frames, and get a resurrected overcrank?
Finally: What's the Atomic Weight of Boron? (no googling, either)
Not a very bad virgin post, if I do say so myself... Hey folks, thanks so much in advance- already learned a ton from you all.
Cheers.
