Hvx footage to mini dv tapes?

Hello. I was given a project where half the footage was dumped from the P2 cards into a MOV format and the other half was dumped through ADOBE "on location".
I was wondering if anyone knows if footage shot on an HVX in HD will lose a lot of quality when it's captured into premiere and then exported back to the DVX 100 mini dv tapes. Will the footage still be HD?

Well, yeah it'll lose tons of quality -- you'd be taking it from HD down to miniDV standard-def. It won't be HD anymore.

thanks for the input. im really backed into a wall. there's over 500 gigs of footage and even though the dvfilm maker program would do it, i know it's going to take forever to do it with 500 gigs.

HI Les, as a recent convert (1 week) to HVX-200 and DVCPROHD (from SONY HVR-Z1P HDV 1080i).. yes yes..

I'd propose that you may maintain thos footage on several relativeky inexpensive external disk drives in order to initially 'park' it somewhere. If you can afford it, I would suggest to buy 2 x 1TB FW800 [2 x 500GB in a can] (or with SATA2 I/F) to park 2 x instances of the 500GB on eachof these storage units.

REasons:
• these drives are reatively cheap these days however , they with not last forever, especially if they are spinning around for a few years. [will eventally fail]
•*2 x instances provide some availability if one instance or the storage volume fails
• somemodest transfer rate to and from the storage 1TB disks over FW.. or better with SATA2 and a card in the host.

OPerationally you can D+ISMOUNT (unmount) these fie systems on these volumes and then just disconnect the HOST links (SATA2, USB or FW800) and the disks will sleep. Simpy plug the interface cable(s) [as above] back into the host and they will mount or you can mount them manually. This way if you are just parking the footage for a while a few days,, it will save the disk actually staying READY to SPIN up or delay them from perpetually spinning around just for that odd time when you are ready to make an access... (for me this is fine)

THis depends on your workflow.

Summary: you will provision the 500GB, have extra headroom for other work artifacts and complex file objects and two insnaces of your stuff.

Hi, i've just joined the group because I need help! One of my hard drives with film footage has failed. I have a second back up but would like to create a minidv tape back up (although it won't be HD). Without bringing it into FCP (I don't have the latest version yet), is there any other way to convert the files to tape? I tried transferring some files back to the P2 card in order to output via the camera but since i am using a Mac, the format was incorrect and not read by the camera.

you can export to the cards in the camera. Has to be 59.98 I believe and I did it a while back but you'll not get as much time since it's not PN. If you want HD back on tape you'll have to rent an HD deck... and put it on DVCPRO tape or DVCPRO HD tape...

pretty costly rental though and the tape ain't cheap either..
