HVX footage shot at 720/24PN and editing at DVCPRO50?

Hey guys,

I have a quick conundrum here...

I shot a bunch of footage on the HVX at 720/24PN. I'm looking for the best work flow with FCP to edit this footage on. I usually use DVCPRO-HD, 720/24P, and a frame rate of 23.98. But a friend of mine is suggesting that I edit on... DVCPRO-50 at 720P with a frame base of 60. He says this works well when using the "HDmpeg2" to deliver the format in.
I was under the impression that the HVX's codec is DVCPRO-HD, not DVCPRO-50. If I set up FCP to edit on DVCPRO-50 would that really make any difference in quality? And when I try to set up DVCPRO-50 on FCP it won't let me choose a frame base rate of 60. I have the choice of 23.98, 29.97, and 25. And last question... if the DVCPRO-50 works, then would I also choose the DV50 NTSC 24p?

This does not sound right to me...

Thanks everyone :)

Although I know nothing about FCP, it surely sounds to me that your friend's suggestion will downgrade your footage. DVCPro50 is an SD codec, not an HD codec. It is 720x480 pixels, so anything bigger would have to be downscaled. It's essentially DV, but at twice the data rate (50 Mbps vs. 25 Mpbs in regular DV or DV25) and with 4:2:2 color vs. the 4:1:1 in DV25.

Use the easy setup in FCP for 720 24p (as it's called). It will default with a frame rate of 23.98 which is what you want to match the clip rate when you're shooting 24p or 24pN. This is the correct DVCPRO-HD setup (unless you're intentionally trying to do something unconventional). KMR is exactly right about the DVC PRO50 codec and you should only use that for SD material.
