HVX Footage screened in cold ass Edmonton

Got to see some HVX footage this afternoon. David Craig was there showing off the HVX. Panasonic and Apple put on an information session with all the goodies on hand.

The stuff he shot outside in 720/60p looked amazing. It was hard to tell the difference between footage shot with the HVX and the Varicam. The stuff shot indoors was NOISY!!! He said it was the display that may have made it so grainy but it was hard to tell.

He said that it was only a preliminary cam, that there will be one more revision before the final revision is released at the end of the month.

8GB P2 cards will be out about a week or two after.

M.S.R.P. = $7500 CAN

All in all, I'm sold. Seeing the HVX right beside the DVX made that decision really easily. The DVX looks like a Fisher Price toy compared to the monster HVX. :cheesy:

Seriously!?...Worrying...but I don't understand if Jan received by November 8th the working model. Isn't it the final version one? The same that we will see tomorrow?

David said that it was mostly firmware tweaks that would be updated in the coming weeks and not neccessarily hardware. There were some features still unavailable but I'm not sure what they were as everything I saw seemed to be functioning.

I apologize for the confusion.

I just hope it is a defect unit...

I was going to buy an HVX exactly because it was supposed to have a good S/N level...
If the camera is noisy, it would be really sad...
hey...the XLH1 and the Z1 are very very clean...

Did you use 12db of gain ?

Yeah, it was at 12db but it was also very noisy at 0db. The room was dimly lit but it wasn't too dark. Part of the blame may lie with the LCD/Plasma screen used to display the footage however. It just wasn't noticeable in the outdoor daylight shots.

There was an SDX-800(? not sure of the exact model) plugged in as well and even projected. To me, it did not seem nearly as noisy as the HVX with the same lighting.

Nobody but David recorded footage with it, but we all played with it and tried out all the buttons and settings. The zoom is nice. Seemed smoother than the DVX. He was pretty protective of those P2 cards with HVX footage on it.

noisy at 0db ??????

Wow...almost everybody who saw footage said it was extremely clean.
...maybe it was well controlled footage.

But i'm still very curious...

Quick, everyone make judgements on how terribly grainy the HVX is!

Yeah, tell me about it!!! Sheeesh... I dread reading all the drivel of people worrying about the camera based on an individual report without having seen the footage themselves.

The first footage I saw from the DVX looked noisy also. It takes an experienced operator to get any camera looking good. I am sure there is nothing to panic about. I showed some DVX footage I shot to a guy still clinging on to his beloved BetaSP camcorder. I want him to buy my DVX so I can have more money for the HVX goodies!!

The DVX was good in therms of noise. However, they changed the chipset for the DVX100a, and it got a LOT noisier. (I sold my original DVX to buy the DVX100A because of the slow shutters and additional cinegammas- and comparing my old 100 vs my 100a, I still prefer the look of the 100... Note that November was shot with the original 100, not the 100a)

Anyway, it can still produce excelent footage- However, you have to put detail coring at + levels and sharpness at inferior levels...

I learned to live it with, and still think its heads above the rest of the prosumer DV cameras, so this shouldn't be a problem with the HVX.

Hey realize David Craig is a Canuck Pany rep and not a cinematographer.
Through my secret sources who have been testing the HVX in LA they say...it is amazing and beyond our expectations....soon it will all be public.

Thanx for listening Jan...

Thx for your comfort. I just can add, as well, what Jarred and Barry said, regarding the clean footage that they seen without noise as we hope!

Hi Folks,

I am going to assume that David was working with the version 2 camera, and not the version 4. Version 4 is gorgeous, actually version 1 was quieter than version 2. Version 1 was on the Res Fest circuit. Be patient, if possible, we have some dynamite footage to share.

Best,

Jan

No there have been two revisions since November 8th.

We will see #4 at DV Expo.

Best,

Jan
