HVX Focusing Distances

Does anybody know if a focus distance chart for the HVX200 is available? That would be a chart showing the conversion from the number scale to the distance scale (i.e. MF91 = 75 feet). I have one for the DVX, but can't seem to find one for the HVX.

Of course, I could switch the display setup between the 2 modes and copy down all the numbers, but maybe someone has already done that. Also, I noticed that the distance scale is a lot more accurate. For example, MF91 is equivalent to 6 different distance readings from 72.1ft to 91.8ft.

You've pointed out why nobody has bothered to make such a chart. The distance readout is much more finely calibrated than the MF00-MF99 numbers. Why not just use it?

Barry,

I agree the distance readout is more useful than the numbers, but my problem is with focusing at infinity. As you mentioned in your book, infinity focus is achieved at MF95, and you can actually focus past infinity with MF99. On my camera, infinity focus is achieved at MF93. So if I were using the numbers scale, when I need infinity focus, I just set it to MF93. But using the distance readout, if I set it to infinity, then the camera can actually be focusing beyond infinity (MF94 to MF99). I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

I have was playing with focus past the infinity read with my camera set to the distance display just today, I agree that infinity on the distance focus readout mode isn't infinity but a quite a sizable chunk of depth before the camera achieves infinity and infinity...
so I guess a chart for that portion would be useful...

I think this may be one reason why some people are getting soft landscape pictures. Instead of focusing on some distant object, they may just turn their focus distance readout to infinity. What they don't realize is that they may well be focusing past infinity, and that's why they get soft pictures.

really? I can't believe that, this "problem" it is so evident even on the camera's LCD... and once noticed you can't just forget it is there

I'm not saying that this is why the landscape pictures are soft, but it may be one possible reason. I agree that it's easy to see the focus if you zoom in and use the focus assist, but landscapes are usually shot at wide angle. Many people, myself included, would just set the focus to infinity and assume that everything would be in focus. But in fact, the camera may be focused beyond infinity. (Look out for Buzz Lightyear  ). Now I know to be more careful with focusing at infinity.
