Every so often, I get stuttering in the Canvas, and this is with 720p 60 material, which I am editing at the moment. I am also taking my HD out of the computer either through a Kona 2, through SDI->DVI converter to flat panel OR to a future product which I cannot name. That video never stutters even if Canvas stutters. I cure the stuttering by turning off external video and then turning it back on. So, I would recommend to anyone experiencing stuttering, regardless of whether you are monitoring external or not, to try toggling external video or even mirror on desktop. It is definitely something in FCP 5.1.1 (perhaps in 5.1 as well).

I've noticed this too when I was doing cross dissolves on my music video. I couldn't really figure out why the transitions seemed a bit jagged on some frames. I just thought it was my processor screwing up.

I've done the crossgrade thing and the new version seems to work ok. In my case the vectorscope was dead after the upgrade (the one in the high Def capture window) but it came alive again after I deleted all FCP prefs and started fresh in the prefs department.

I'm still running on PPC and have had the issue come up. I'm not sure about the new Intel Macs though.

Nah, not the same thing. I get that too, but that's a viwer issue and doesn't show up on the master. What I'm talking about is specific to the 24PN codec and it shows up only when rendering the file.

I got the 5.1 upgrade today so I'm going to try the upgrade. I'll post any changes I expeience.

Thanks again to Robb! I imported the whole project into 60 drop timeline and that got rid of all the problems. Still had to deal with all the slow motion footage I slowed down in FCP, that was a pain, and I had to render everything, but I got the project done on time and I'm off to deliver it. PHEW!

Hey Punch - that's great it worked.
It is related to the camera settings though, and therefore how fcp interprets the footage. I don't even have the hvx yet so I can't offer any detail as to what the exact menu setup should be. Have played around with dl'd footage from it quite a bit, tho ...

And in regard to either the Viewer or Canvas stuttering on playback - are those windows set to "fit all" ? If they're not - then that very often causes the kind of thing you're describing.

Thanks Robbo,

Do you have a cameraman that knows what the menu set up should be?

huh, looked at the settings on the HVX200...not much to set.

This is definately an issue with FCP and is not a camera setting problem. I am beginning to suspect it may have to do with footage imported on 5.0.4 or 5.1 and then loaded into a Universal project. I have more testing to do. It seems to plague only certain clips and even then, it seems to come and go depending on the render. I did find that having the transparency set on the offending clip set to 99% forced FCP to rerender and seemed to smooth things out. Return the clip to 100%, rerender and the issue returns.

Very strange.

ahh - well then. Maybe there is a couple or three issues on the software front.
Thanks filmstox. Always something ...

I might get a chance later on today to test some 24 stuff - just have to finish a dv thing at the mom.

I'm working entirely in 5.04. My clips are very consistant. They always stutter in the same way in the same exact spot. If I slip or roll the footage/transition, I can get a different type of stutter (sometimes its barely noticeable...but its there) but when I return to the starting point the same stutter effect returns.

99%...dang you're trying everything. Make sure you read Robb's advice...saved my @ss today. Not much good if you're doing a film out.

Haven't had time to read over the Panasonic HD workflow..but I will . Thanks for the link.

I am on a dual 2ghz REVB G5 running 10.4.6 and FCP 5.04- i have tried effortlesly to recreate this issue, i have had no success. I have NO strobing/blinking/jerking in my disolves or any rendered effects. Shooting 24PN.

However, i must note that a while back, when i was trying to print to a DVCPROHD deck, i was unable to record audio to the deck, i would just get garbled tones almost as if something was broken. I reset preffs, troubleshooted every possible aspect of the deck and the computer- nothing, nadda, no luck. Just by accident i decided to reinstall the entire system and run only the updates we had used on the last job with the deck (previous quicktime installer)- Turns out it was the latest quicktime update that was preventing us to print a propper audio track to tape. We installed newer updates one by one until we were left with the same problem as before, it was quicktime, and it was messing only with DVCPROHD.

I cant say these 2 issues are related, but just coincidence that people are finding issues with playback of their footage. Try using a previous installer of quicktime. Im on quicktime 7.04 and have NO ISSUES with 24PN playback before, thru, or durring transitions or any rendered material.

Changing video processing from high precision YUV to 8-bit solves the render problem with the majority of the footage because I now don't have to render as many dissolves, but it still doesn't help the footage that needs to be rendered, such as text overlays and transitions into stills.

Does this help you filmstox?

I think I switched over to that setting while trying to fix this problem early on.

Hey, guys I've also been fighting this problem and PUNCH and I have been posting exstensively on the Apple board. The only thing I have not tried is the 30p timeline trick. But here is what I think.

1. It is a FCP issue on 720p24pN P2 footage only. 5.1.1 has NOT fixed it.
2. I've had it on all my full rendered footage since 5.0.4.
3. Switching video processing from high to 8-bit did NOT help me.
4. I think the problem lies as to WHEN you imported the P2 footage into FCP. Example: If you try to import footage post-5.1.1 update it will be fine. But if you have imported footage on projects you've been working on over the last several months the 5.1.1 upgrade does NOT seem to solve the problem. Therefore, I THINK I will have to laboriously re-import all my footage from MXF files into FCP 5.1.1 and that sucks. It REALLY sucks if you ditched your MXF files in the mistaken belief that FCP QT.mov imports can serve as master footage.
5. I hope that perhaps Jan Crittenden can get on the horn with her counterpart at Apple FCP software design and see what can be done.
6. I think the floodgates will open on this from shooters, editors and producers who have been shooting and importing from MXF to QT in FCP pre-5.1.1 and have not gone to final render; that is when you realize you have a serious problem.
7. I have this problem on a G4 Powerbook, a 3 year old G5 and a brand new G5 so it is the software.
7. I'm still not really sure what to do in my situation. I keep hoping Apple will FXI it so it affects imported footage retroactive to 5.1.1 upgrade.

Sadly jgrimson's conclusions match my own. I won't be able to continue testing until later in the week but everything I've tried so far agrees with what JG is finding.

Thanks for the tip about switching to 8 bit YUV, I'll give it a shot. Thankfully I'm very anal about my p2 archive and will be able to reimport if necessary, but with over a 1.8 terabytes of footage, I REALLY hope I don't have to!

Anyone think Media Manager can help the process of re-importing/coverting from P2 to QT? I've never really used it and actually am unsure if it would function on a P2 import since I know itis designed for Log&Capture. Anybody have any insight on this since I think many of us will have to re-convert from P2 to QT on our ongoing pre-5.1.1 projects.

Just shot some 720pN footage today and captured to P2. Applied some filters and rendered. Absolutely no problems in FCP 5.1.1
