HVX feature - wish I had thought of this earlier..

...a little late now, but i just thought of an interesting feature to add to the HVX that I think would be really great to have.. likely a firmware update only though.

..anyway I think it would be REALLY useful to be able to format the variable framerate recordings in 720p to a specified FPS in the recording..

and what i mean by that is that it would be very nice to have the ability to say ..set up a scene file to shoot 60p.. and record it as 24p.. so shooting 1 second of footage captured at 60p ..would play back at 24p and therefore take 2.5 seconds to play back.. so you could preview your slowmo right there in the field. also useful for speeding things up.. you can shoot your kung fu scene at 22fps with a specified playback framerate of 24 fps and then review it right there on set and see if the action wil look right or not right off the camera. Now obviously you could dump the footage to a laptop and fire up your NLE and do all the clip time conversions to get it to play back right when converting framerates for slow or fast motion.. but wouldnt it be nice to have the camera do it for you and be able to preview you effects with no hassle right after you yell cut on the shot! .. i think so anyway.. basically the camera would just have to write the distinct frames into a different FPS format than they are being currently captured at.. you would only need 60, 30 and 24 fps as options for playback framerates because you wouldnt be using other framerates for anything on playback, but you could take your 2 fps footage and play it back at 60 fps for superspeed effects and see it right after the shot. anyway . since the camera is in the IT domain.. it should be possible, and i assume it can already play back naitive 24p 30p and 60p files since you can preview those in camera already. so why not have an option to have the camera create a file of the playback speed of your choice and save all the NLE hassle since thats what variable frame rates are mostly for anyway.

bah.. anyways .. like i said,, probably way too late on this.. but if not .. Jan.. I think you'd win big points for this feature popping up in the production models :)

I'm not sure if it works the way you've described it, but I seem to recall seeing somewhere that you *can* preview the results of your variable framerates right on the camera. Maybe Barry knows more or Jan can confirm it for us... but it may actually already be there.

Not sure... I know you can downconvert the variable-frame-rate HD footage to DV tape and retain the timebase (so your 60p footage will be converted to slow-mo on the DV tape) so maybe there's a way to just play it back at that rate?

Definitely a Jan question.
