I dont get it,

OK, so my macbook with two GB RAM and 7200 HD runs Final cut, but when playing HVX 1080 footage it drops frames all the time.
But my dual G5 2Ghz tower with @GB ram does the same. I am trying to edit a short film and it seems that i cant watch my edit as it constantly stops playing do to drooped frames.

What are you guys editing with???

What am i doing wrong?

I am using a 7200 external fire wire hard drive, that should be OK right?

I couldn't get my MB to play 720/30p without dropping frames. I got an MB Pro and all's well with the world.

I could be wrong, but HD footage and FCP is gonna require more power.

If you turn off the Dropped Frames Notice, it'll still drop some frames, but at least it'll play at realtime for editing purposes.

Macbook is right on the cusp of being able to run FCP. In fact, Apple says as a blanket statement that Macbook does not meet the minimum standards for FCS. Motion will not run; FCP will run, but it is at your own risk. FCP 5.1.2 is already beginning to depend upon GPU for Fx plugs and that's where the MB will fall apart with FCP. Its shared graphics memory is the problem.

I hope your not running you media files on the internal hard drive.
This will drop frames on any system !
Always use external hard drives for video and media so you don't clutter the internal bus.

How do i turn off the Dropped Frames Notice?

It sounds like a combo of using your internal drive for playback and using the insufficient video card that the macbook has... Guaranteed formula for dropped frames. 2GB RAM is the minimum i would reccomend for editing HD..

What kind of video card are you using on the G5?

You are not indicating on the Dual G5 your media storage drive (the same firewire drives?) as well as amount of RAM, version of FCP, QT, OS... anything. Kind of hard to see your system from here.

Current versions are OS 10.4.8; QT 7.1.2 and FCP 5.1.2.

I have said this for years-- Firewire drives will one day come back to bite you in the tush. Not the best for editing. Yes it can be done and with notebook computers it was your only option until external SATA appeared on the scene.

There are any number of drop-frame troubleshooting tips in FCP:
Make certain viewer/canvas is set to Fit
Sometimes just try turning off mirror on desktop
Do a Render Only->Mixdown
Make certain you are set to Dynamic RT

Give us some additional system details on that G5 and hopefully we can help.

Are you referring to running the media of of an external drive meanwhile playback & editing?

It seems that best way for me to pull the info off my p2 was to connect it to my MBP then place it in a folder then move it to my external. (External to HVX200 was not working smoothly)

HVX200 footage doesn't require that much power at all to be used in a single stream workflow. It's less than twice the bandwith of mini dv.
For the dude with the mac book - the problem is the mac book - not designed for use with final cut definitely not with hd - it's a graphics card problem most likley.
Over all - you need only 1GB of ram to cut HD - more is better but you only need one. As far as your g5 goes - well we have beefy systems and a couple of cheap 1 processor G5s that I picked up and put studio on with 1.5 GB of RAM and we have never dropped frames on any of them.
If the drive is indeed 7200rpm you shouldn't have an issue - FW400 or 800? FW400 will drop more often than 800 but should still work "technically" - I recommend 800 minimum.
Also are you running other programs or pulling other stuff from the drive? Is it the only drive on the bus?

External to HVX is slow because your MBP is using same bus for 2 devices instead of just 1 when you have it hooked up to go directly to the computer. Get another bus for your express slot - ooh - eSata is even better.
