HVX Compositing Test

i'm getting a bit bored with colour correction this ..and colour correction that..seems like everyone HAS to do some of it now..and rather than a useful tool , its just an overused gimmic in a lot of stuff i see.,,i think it has its place.. but not when it screams out " look at me , i'm colour corrected..wheeeeeee , have a tee-shirt"

i thought it was a bit too much done on this , and whats with the crappy jedi??? killed by some goldfish??? - thats what u get when u show off your fancy lightsabre and force push/pulls to a chick!!!

I didnt like the coloring, sorry. Too green7yellow, too bright, too saturated. Couldnt understand what's the story so i dont know wich colour would be best to veiculate the drama.

I think that overall, the scene was very good. It definately made me want to know more about the story and the characters involved. I agree that with the compression the way it was, it was hard to apreciate it fully. keep up the good work... you've got something there.

We used layered compositing in AfterEffects for the sabres and Combustion for the CC. 3D Studio Max was what created the rather unimpressive snake-thing in the water. (The original storyboard had a tentacle of water grab him from behind. I didn't want to see it because, well, I didn't think it would look good).

The inspiration for the CC came from Battlestar Galactica (at which point our similarities come to a screeching halt).

The example of Colour Grading/Timing you gave, 4mat Voltaire, was absolutely incredible. Thank you.

For a test, it worked out fine. Nothing that hasn't been done before, but it showed you could line up a lightsaber or two.

While I agree about the color grading comments, I disagree about the way Spartacus presented his arguement. Tactless. You don't have to kiss someone's butt to tell them that they haven't done the best of jobs, but you CAN say it in a better way; that's for sure.

That being said, the Color Grading examples are pretty good. Thanks for sharing.

Next, share some examples or tutorials on how to use Power Windows to your benefit.

To what exactly are you refering to when stating my argumentation was "tactless"?
Just out of curiosity, feel free to PM me your answer, this thread has gone a bit off topic in some parts...

Should've rephrased that. I will PM ya, though.

I was referring more to the statements you made after the initial response to his footage. Telling people where or where they should not be and all that isn't for professionals; even in an arguement.

Well, maybe the movies you mentioned don´look videoish, because they were shot on film...?
And if you´re part of the "art is art is art" BS fraction you simply shouldn´t go to a public forum and ask for criticism. Period.
Actually I wasn´t trying to tell anyone what to do (though it probably can be read like that), I was rather GENERALLY questioning the reason behind comming to forum - a place of discourse - and then not accepting criticism, or, to be more specific excusing everything with "art".
Guys, Beanstalk did a "HVX Compositing Test", he posted to get some feedback, the feedback he got wasn´t that good all in all, but he didn´t feel "nit picked" and complained that his test was "art" and thus incontrovertible.
And then selfproclaimed art critics come and feel the urge to call his "test" "art" and complain abut the others giving constructive criticism.
Ok, just to please you: next time I see a bad key, of-sync sound or bad acting I will write "Reminded my of Fellini, great piece of art!".

Try not to be condescending, it'll make you a better person overall.

Of course, at this point I realize that you're not to be reasoned with and I'll step to the side to let this thread continue.

Well, I was trying to explain my point of view, you´re just attacing me personaly by calling me "tactless", "unprofessional", "condescending" and "not to reason with"...
I really don´t think you qualify for giving advice on becoming a better peson here.

If you were going for a Star Wars look the CC did not give it that. It was way too green and saturated.

We weren't trying to make it look like Star Wars, we just felt that within a short period we were probably better off using an already understood world.

In hopes of avoiding any further debate on "methods to critique with" I should say that I find there to be a difference between constructive critique and simple criticism (one's way easier). I try not to read tone in text because it'll just get me into trouble.

Regardless, I appreciate everyone's time and comments. I've been able to take away knowledge and thoughts I hadn't considered before, which is precisely what I hoped for.
