hvx built in mic

if you're going to have any dialog, forget using the cam mic, it's worthless. But for just getting ambient sound, it's ok. I use a shotgun mic all the time though.

i never use the built in for anything other than goof-off/ family/test shots (and rarely even for that).

for real client work. you need shotguns, lavs, stereomics, etc...etc...etc...

The built in mics do a pretty good job at recording large organs!

I guess that can be read a few ways... I should say "pipe organs"?

You can never, under any circumstances, ever record good dialogue with any built-in mic. It's for ambient sound only, or emergency use.

Note that it's always recording anyway, so if your audio from the shotgun or lav is screwed, check tracks 3 and 4 -- it may save the shot.

They're also good for room-tone, mixed very low when the lav or shotgun are heavily gated.

Also, shotguns are not ideal for indoor shooting. Boom mic, yes, but you'd want a hypercardioid or cardioid instead of a shotgun in most cases.

How do you handle the mics when you have a porta brace camera cover on the HVX.

Thanks for all the answers.

In pretty much any circumstance where you're recording people talking, you should have the mic as close to them as possible and not on the camera, so it won't really be an issue. :)

If there was another addition they could make to the 200a/170 that would really make me happy, it would be to add another audio input that would allow you to record from that input rather than the on board mics.

Even if it was just a stereo 1/8" jack, it would be nice to send a pair of wireless lavs to those channels and still have 2 XLR inputs for boom.
