hvx basic questions

next week I'm shooting with the hvx200... I don’t have the equipment (we're renting) so I could use some advice…

1. if I have 2 p2 cards loaded, and shoot non-stop will the jump from card #1 to card #2 be seamless? is there a redundancy? do I lose a few frames?

2. if I'm shooting, can I eject a card and load in a new empty card, without powering down? while I’m recording?

3. I will eventually edit the piece on a Mac with FCP…

(a) should I off/down load the footage to a p2 store drive?

(b) I have a powerbook G4 with a PC Card/Card bus slot- will this work with the P2 cards? Is this a stable way of transferring footage or is the P2 store a better method?

(c) how do I ingest the media into my computer- is it a simple drag and drop? or is there some software needed to acquire the footage

4. Does anyone have any sample footage/stills from HD with 1/8 or 1/4 promist and or white promist filters?

5. If the project is just going to finish on video, would it be best to go with 720/24pN or 720/24p… I would like to get the best quality image possible, and at the same time max out the amount of footage I can record without having to re-load.

Thanks in advance!

Lets see:

1. it is seemless from one card to the next , no problem there.

2. you cant eject a card and put a new one in the same slot and have seemless recording. you CAN however: say you have 2 cards, you fill up card 1 and now its recording on card 2 spanning the clip, still recording you can take out card 1 and replace it with a blank card and when card 2 is finished recording it will go back to the other slot to keep recording.

3. A. not neccessary because...
B. you can dump using the Powerbook G4. Just copy the entire card over to the HDD.
C. The software needed to capture the P2 card footage is built into Final Cut Pro. Be sure to be up to date with FCP Studio, 5.1.4 is the most recent.

4. Sorry i dont have any.

5. 720p/24pN will give you same quality as 24p but save you space on the card giving you more recording time. go with pN!

Can I use my laptop just as a vehicle to download the footage and empty the cards... the project will be edited on a mac with FCP studio 5.1.4, but my laptop has an older version of FCP. I'm planning to store the media on an external hard drive... so im just hoping to use the powerbook as I would the p2 store (and save some $$)... but do i need the latest FCP on the powerbook to do this? (I definately will if I want to view the footage on location/on the laptop, right?)

you will need FCP or another P2 viewer app to see the footage after copying the P2 card through the laptop, but you dont need any software at all to copy the P2 card from the Card to your Desktop or external HDD
