HVX Backpack - storing cam vertical?

i just got the porta-brace backpack BK-1NR and it seems that im supposed to put the camera vertical. The bag specifics say cams up to 15 inch's but the only way to fit it into the bag would be to put the camera with the lens facing down. what do you think of this? is this okay for the camera? Im gonna be doing a lot of traveling, and i'll need a backpack. ill prob have to get some extra foam to make sure its snug but is it still cool to go vertical?

id consider getting a different one but not sure if i'll have enough time. The other portabrace bags looks good. hopefully i could figure out this bag but if not would you suggest a different porta bag?

I was under the impression that it was not a good idea to store a chip camera pointing down, that it encouraged pixel loss. Don't know if this just an "old wives tale" or not.

I don't know about facing down... but I've had my camera in a lowepro backpack for almost a year.... my camera is on it's side with the mike holder at the bottom of the bag. I couldn't do the kind of shooting that I do without this backpack.. and it gives really good protection and is big enough to carry the P2store, batteries and some other gack.. Godbless those guys who use a pelican or hardcase.. but I just don't know how they do it personally.. I'd be knocking kneecaps out with one..

I had my DVX and now my HVX in a backpack with the lens facing down. I am skiing with it and have also a rather big tripiod attached outside. I use lots of padding and have the cam, 3 batteries, charger, microphone, mattbox, 3 4x4 filters, .6 wideangle adapter all in its place. Why should a cam not be upside down in a backpaxk? how should the "chip lose pixels"? the most dangerous part for a cam is the shipping part. Those guys throw around the boxes. I will post a pick of my setup later.

I don't know if the whole store it lens down is an old wives' tale or not, but personally it just makes more sense to store it lens up.

My main reason being just that it seems the bottom of whatever case you use will always have the most impact, from simply placing the backpack/case on the floor, to storing it, ect. If it where to fall or experience a drop by accident, it is more likely the impact will be in the back of the camera. I've seen more than one camera fall lens first, and let me tell it you it isnt pretty. I'd rather have to replace a broken EVF and battery holder than the lens.

Hi:

I just toted an HVX-200 in a CineBags CB-20. In this backpack, the HVX is stored lens up, the camera is resting on the EVF and rear of the camera body. I did have to take the mic holder off of the camera to make it all fit but I was able to carry the HVX, three batteries, six cards, the AC power supply, three hard drives, headphones, mics, cables, etc. all in one backpack. Flew to Florida, then up to New York, shot all over the city and up in Conneticut, dragged the thing on three different flights, carts, rental car, etc.

No problems or issues, worked like a charm. I personally would never transport a camera resting upside down on the lens. That would be a very unwise idea IMHO.

Best,

Dan

I went to Cuba for 1 and a half months with a HVX lens down in a Kata backpack. No problems at all. That backpack is very, very strong, and the bottom of it is the strongest part. As the lens isn't actually even touching the bag (the matt box is), i was not worried in the slightest. I even could fit a laptop in a sleeve right against the back; it is really good design. Further, I love backpacks for bags while travelling since they look like you just have your clothes in them.

Just for my information…

Just for my information…

I asked the same question 3 weeks ago and still don't have any aswer.

What do I wrong ?

BTW, I finally store the camera with the lens facing upward.
I prefer the body to support the weight of the lens
that the lens support the weight of the body…

Hi guys! I'm out looking for a backpack for my HVX200+MatteBox, do you mind sharing the lowepro and kata model numbers? Does the CineBags backpack fit the cam with the mattebox attached?

Thanks!

I second the reccomendation for the KATA backpack (# 207 I believe) Lots of velcro inserts so you can reallyy get the cahmera to fit nicely (lens up) with veryy little external pressure. The bottom is tough ad and so is the front piece. This eliminates the fear of any type of crushing. The backppack also has a "holster" that can be used to accomodate a tripod The laptop sleeve in the back is sheer genius. I must say I felt very high tech about tthree weeks ago when I set up all my stuff in a remote canyon in Angeles Crest. It was snowy and icy and I did not see anyone else on this 8 mile trail. The shots of the creek are absoulutely gorgeous...But I digress. GET THIS BACKPACK !!

I use a Lowepro backpack I have my camera with the lens down and I have had no problems. All the photos in the Lowepro catalog and website show still cameras stored (very expensive telephoto) lens down. My pack came with padded velcro panels that I could use to divide up the interior space (intended to separate a bunch of lenses with padded compartments) I used those panels to keep the camera lens supported by a nylon convered foam panel. Below that are 2 soft accessory cases full of cables and other stuff to keep the camera supported at least 4 inches from the bottom of the pack.

There is even a 15inch laptop compartment (that fits a 17 tightly) with a water sealed zipper.

I'll put in a 3rd vote for the Kata backpack. We have the 502, and it holds the HVX, microphones, zepplin, SLR, and just about everything else, including a laptop (in the back pouch)

My only complaint is the thing has so many nooks and crannies that sometimes I have to spend 5 minutes looking for something if someone else has put away the gear after a shoot.
