Hvx Animation Questions

HVX newbie here - has anyone here done single frame animation w/hvx?

any examples/tutorials/user reports etc? cel vs. claymation style? (former probably easier in an AE approach?

if i was going for a 24p look, would the calculation be based on shooting in DV cam and importing the clip for 25fps playback to achieve a filmic look?

did a search, but nothing i could find directly addressing it

thanks

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. The hvx does single frame shooting, so it's no problem to do stop motion or anything else you care for. If you are shooting drawings, shoot 2 frames at a time. One thing to note, is the camera has to be in video mode, and you can only do timelapse in hd. And it's shot at either 30 or 60 frames, not 24. Don 't know why Panny did this, but at least they offer single frame shooting on the hvx, which you couldn't do with the dvx.

i've shot in 16mm single frame...

i've shot in 16mm single frame...

most of my older work was stopframe on an old bolex
and most of my recent work has been AE

my questions were for specific issues/tips in using the hvx (or DV animation in general)
- i've not shot this way (vid) before, and though i'm pretty sure i can wade thru it and find things that work, i was looking to see if anyone had firsthand experience with this camera - quirks, lighting, motion fx w/apeture etc - anything really

i read the bit about shooting in cam mode (30fps) and i was curious as to why the 24p was left out, as well - thats why the question about doing the 24 move in post, should work out equally if altering framerate is not a problem...

thanks

You might find you get a better quality image with a digital SLR camera. You have a better lens and more shutter and exposure options . Bring the shots into AE or a NLE, it can use an image sequence as footage.

I made animaton since 1972, also I used a H16 spring bolex for many years.

Always praying for smart, cheap, proffesional devices.

Panny , serious magic, adobe and others hear my prays and develop what nowI use to domy work.
Recently I found Stop motion Pro, I'mtesting but till now.. wow!!!

Shot whatever you want (cel, clay, puppets, dollies, etc. in frames, not movies; shot dv, 1080 or 720 HD, shot ones or twoos, later in edit software, open a 24p project, import fames and voila! no big deal.

My advise: first record and read audio, make a shooting board, and then shoot your feature.

Good luck!

thanks for the tip
exactly the kind of info i was looking for
as with analog tape vs. digital audio (i work in film & audio) we try to build the
grundge backin - i'm looking to do the same w/animation -

please post your review of Stop Motion Pro when you've completed your
testing - never heard of it, but looks promising

also, love to see any examples of your work - tried your web .com link but wouldn't load

Sorry, my page is under update, hope will be ready week end.

...stop motion cont.

not to sound like a sales plug here, but
there are some great examples
(paper peter, sawtooth & miss my maniac)
and nice rotoscoping and other tutorials
showing the onion skinning & compositing potential

is there anything like this on the MAC side?

looks like the dSLR that shoots 16x9 (lumix comes to mind) and HVX are going to be a pretty flexible way work

I agree

There is Istopmotion. It isn't as professional as stopmopro, but it works well with mac and HVX 200. It is also a lot cheaper. By far the most professional software is animator dv. I think it comes from poland and unfortunatly the guys are less than cooperative. But it has all the features one can dream of.

The HVX 200 is very good for stop trick animation. SLR cameras of course have a far superior image quality, but they are very very VERY slow, no realtime preview, no fast animating. Also no possibility for mixing with realtime recordings. I filmed three films with SLR and can assure everyone, that it is a nightmare.

If you can't live with the HVX image quality you might want to try capturing images over HD-SDI with a JVC or Canon. For claymotion the Fraunhofer IIS MicroHDTV might be a good choice (because of the size). Potentially also interesting is the announced mini RED. All depending on the sort of animating of course.
