HVX and widescreen

In standard-def DV mode, does the HVX200 shoot true anamorphic widescreen, or does it just crop and squeeze like the DVX100a?

You have the option of shooting either native 16:9 or "cropped" 4:3 with the HVX. It is not like the DVX, it is true 16:9.

First, go to the recording method and choose 480i in the cadence you prefer. Then go to the "Camera Setup" menu and choose "squeeze" from the aspect conversion selection. "Normal" gives you 4:3, "Letterbox" gives you cropped 4:3, and "Squeeze" gives you anamorphic 16:9 in DV mode. Nicely, the HVX presents the squeezed footage unsqueezed on your LCD so you don't have to frame up stretched looking people all day.

No problem! :) There are certainly a lot of menus on the HVX, and while that can be a little intimidating at first it is definitely nice to have such a wide variety of choices. Good luck with your shooting!

Anybody going to try an anamorphic lens on the HVX to get a cinemascope-like image? Would be interesting.

That's an interesting, although perhaps expensive, idea. What about just shooting full rez and cropping it? Fewer pixels but probably a pretty nice look to it anyway because we're starting with HD.

joe, as has been discussed on the forum before, putting a dvx anamorphic lens on an HVX is not a good idea because the anamorphic lens is unable to resolve more than SD resoultion and will cripple the HD image. (It would result in the cinemascope-like aspect ratio though, I believe.)

Also, the anamorphic lens is 72mm and the new hvx lens is 82mm.

I'd love an optical 2.35:1 HVX option but I don't think one exists, or will exist in the future.

I´ve been storming the internet: There really doesn´t seem to exist a 82mm adapter, yet. But IMHO that would be an interesting tool an wouln´t be too expensive at all: (500-1000$ maybe?)
