Hvx and the sun question

I was shooting some stuff out in the middle of a football field and it was a really sunny day.

My question is how do you achieve a clear or smooth looking picture? What I mean by that is I always have to turn on the internal ND to 1/64 then go to about f stop 5.6 to keep from the sky being blown out but now my subject is more dark(like a lot of contrast). I mean my subject always gets dark it just doesn't look that good.

How do you keep your subject lit up and not have the sky blown out? Do you have to use real ND filters on the front of the lense.

Any tips or tricks?

thanks alot,

steve

Use a graduated ND filter that darkens only part of the scene, and/or use fill light on the subject.

I think your biggest help will be your positioning of the camera, sun, and talent. Shooting with the talent back-lit by the sun is a sure way to make sure your sky is blown out. move them so they are facing the sun, and you are shooting against a bare part of the sky and you should be more successful.
