HVX and PC

Hello all
I just shot a job where we imported everything into FCP and the editor gave the effects guy quicktimes but the effects guy works on a PC and he is having a problem.
Here is what he wrote me:

"I am having trouble working with the footage on the PC end of
things. Basically QuickTime does not want to play the DVC Pro
format on my PC. I down loaded a file from avid called: Avid
QuickTime Codecs LE 1.20, but after installing it does not seem
to fix the problem. Do you have any insight into working with
the footage on the PC?"

any help would be much appreciated!
thanks in advance!

by the way we shot 720/24pn at 60fps

QuickTime supports DVCProHD on the Mac only, which is why you can't open the files on the PC. My understanding is that Avid does have a free codec that will let you use DVCProHD QuickTime files on the PC, but I'm not sure exactly what to download or whether the download you mentioned is the correct one.

Another option would be to open up the files on a Mac and export them in another format that is common to both platforms.

I've been using DVfilm Raylight on the PC. You have to copy the MXF files and then run it to create AVIs. Works beautifully with Premiere 2.0 (so far). Of course that just gets the effects guy footage in AVI format. It doesn't handle the return trip back to FCP.

I'm curious about the best format that allows round-tripping from MAC to PC and back. The last time I had to deal with this I output a sequence of stills, but it was a tiny clip, and I wasn't concerned about losing the DVCPROHD 4:2:2 color.

I think locating the free Avid codec will be crucial, since that seems to be the only way for them to preserve the full spatial and color resolution on both platforms.

You should download and install the P2 Viewer for Windows from Panasonic's website. That program will play DVCPRO HD clips, although you might not be too thrilled about the playback framerate of 1080p ;-)
