HVX and M2 Feature Western Teaser

Hey everyone. I am shooting a feature length western with Kenneth Yeung, dp of Illegal, using the HVX200 and the M2 adapter. We threw together a small teaser just to show you what is happening and how the footage is turning out.

We are in t he middle of production, in fact we have another 6:30am call tomorrow and I only slept for 2 1/2 hours last night and we shot all day today. Only 5 days left of shooting and hopefully we will get enough money to add another few days.

Here is the link to the teaser. Should hopefully have a better one up after the shoot.

Yeah, it is very much temp. We threw it together to show some investors what we were shooting. We only had 2/3 of our footage to work with and 4 hours to edit and sweeten it. I titled it "Temp Trailer" to hopefully get some grace.

We are using the HVX200 and M2 adapter with Nikon Prime lenses. I believe we have an 18, 24, 35, 50, 85 all with stops around 1.8. Our follow focus is a M2 follow focus. We also have a stediecam rig.

Also note that nothing is color timed yet. We are not going to bother with that until we are done shooting and editing.

Oh that's good because I want to shoot with the same set-up in similar hot, sunny and dusty conditions. I'll be muting the colors slightly and get as much detail in my images too. I really want every spec of dust and every wrinkle in skin visible.

Which Steadicam rig are you using?

I also forgot but I believe we are shooting with a chocolate filter. We have the stediecam mini - it barely works for us but gets the job done.

looks great , music and gun sound..not keen on... but visuals look fab

why u say the steadicam mini barely works for u ??

cheers

The camera and M2 unit is barely over the wieght limit for the stedicam - that is the only issue with that. Also, I do not like the gun shot sounds - just remember that this was edited and mixed in only 4 hours and with only 2/3 of the footage of the 1st week of shooting.

So this isn't "really" a trailer it is more of a compilation of shots just to show people what we are doing.

Wow, nice. I felt like the acting in the first part of the teaser was a HAIR amateur.

but I am very excited to see this kind of movie shot on the HVX.

Would you post an HD version of the teaser? though we can basically see it, it's impossible to really see how good it looks, and I'll bet those locations and colors and light come off REALLY sweet in full res...

We posted HD versions of our DramaFest entry, and they are not too bad to download. We were also working in a period-sort-of -piece with a rich look.

Is there a site or anything with details of the production?

Oh yeah, make those gunshots LOUDER LOUDER LOUDER. And when you think they are too loud, make then EVEN LOUDER!!! :)

Technical questions. I am trying to figure out the best way to back up my MXF files for the HVX P2 cards. I considered burning them to DVD but the fact that we have over 200GB of data made me quickly reconsider.

Any thoughts of a good way to back up the files. We currently have two hard drives and the files on both drives, but I would like to have hard copies that will not have the risk of being lost if the drive goes bad.

Another option I thought of is printing all files to HDCAM tape.

We are going to do an offline edit with our files that were made from the MXF files and then reconvert them to 10bit Film Scan quality for our online. We are using the Cineform Intermediate.

Thoughts on the best way to back up these MXF files would be awesome.

thanks

Looks awesome. You could backup 200 gigs on about 24 dual layer dvds. A spindle of 25 quality discs would only cost about 30 bucks. Check out Newegg.com.

I like the footage, really shows off the HVX.

Do you have some Behind the Scenes photo's or footage to share? eg. Lighting setup, etc...

Thanks,
Derrick

I'll probably do the DVD thing for backing up for the time being.

As far as behind the scenes I don't have a whole lot of photos to choose from but here is one of how we lit daytime interiors for most of our stuff. The exteriors was pretty much natural light and a few bounces and scrims here and there.

A typical set up for our Saloon interiors.
