Just getting back my HVX 720/24p footage off a FCP timeline back from a post house in Beta SP (NTSC) for festival screenings (one PAL tape will go to the UK). They tell me they're sending it back at 30 fps, saying "its smoother." Haven't received it yet, next Tuesday, but I'm not sure what to expect.
I'm purposely shooting 720/24pN for film look, which it looks like in the timeline and QT derived from it (even DVDs)---the HVX is great in getting a film look---but I've no experience shooting at other frame rates. What can I expect? And will this totally kill the film look I shot for in the first place? Of course I'm not doing a film-out just now, but it's important to me that my film look as much like film as possible. I wasn't asked if I wanted any frame rate change, and would have said "No."
I'm going to have to find someone in my neighborhood to play the tape for me, don't have immediate access to a Beta SP deck to review it. Most of the festivals out there, and all that I've submitted to so far, want Beta SP of Digibeta for competitive screenings. If I had my way, the festivals would be screening QuickTime movies and leaving the film looking as close to my vision as I manged in editing.
Kind of apprehensive, good thing the tape isn't due at a festival any time soon (June).
