HVX 24p?

I posted this at the end of someone else's thread but I don't think anyone took notice of it. I've been shooting a project with a cinematographer I hired who has an HVX. My footage is in 720p, but I'm having to import it as 59.94. This is what he told me.

"The footage is 720/24p. The HVX always records 60 frames/sec, the 24 frames you use are marked frames that the editing program recognizes. You must use the setting 720/60(59.94) and you get the footage playing back at the right setting."

My question is when I export it am I exporting it as 60 or do I have to do something special to make it 24?

The HVX does not always record 60 fps. The Varicam did, but the HVX does not.

You can use the 720P/24PN mode when recording to the cards, and the HVX will record only the frames you shoot. What will be on the card will be a 23.976 file, not a 59.94 file.

If you're recording on a Firestore, the 24PN mode will not be output through firewire, so you can't record that to the Firestore directly. However, version 3.0 of the firmware for the Firestore allows a "PN" mode which will automatically strip the extra frames from 24p footage shot in the "24P" mode, which DOES output everything in a 60 FPS stream, giving you the same net effect -- a 23.976 file instead of a 59.94 file.

With file based cameras, the footage needs to be recorded at 720p/24pN rather than 720p/24p which is really 60p with 24 frames in it. This is different than a tape based recording from which the 24 native frames can be extracted while being captured.

Okay well it was recorded to the firestore so i guess that's why it's 60. So is there anything I can do or am I stuck with 60?

I'm from Mars and was wondering where this is all taught because it ain't in the manual... is it? And don't make me buy something else.

I am also wondering about this. How about the 1080i/24p and 1080i/24pa modes? I can work with them in Avid on a 1080/59.94 timeline. What format are they in when exported? 24p? 59.94i?

To add to the confusion, how can I use footage recorded at 720p24pn and 1080i24pa in the same timeline? Is this possible?

In what editor? It's trivial in Vegas or EDIUS, you can easily drop any frame rate or resolution onto the timeline. 1080/24pA and 720/24pN would intermix freely in either Vegas or EDIUS.

Avid - I have Media Composer 2.5. Would be willing to upgrade to 2.7 if this functionality has been added. Don't think it is possible in my version.
