Ad I posted on CL:

I woke up today 7/1/10 to realize my HVX200 was stolen from my car last night. If you come across it i will reward you with $500 . Really, if you stole it ill give you $500 to bring it back. CASH. I just need my camera back, its how i work everyday. To put it in simple terms... you took a carpenters hammer, so now, i cant work. This particular camera has tape over the p2 cover and also has tape near the battery. The lower battery tabs are broken off (like most hvx's) the camera is missing a lens cover and has a uv filter. It also has velcro on the lens hood. There are minor scratches atop the handle, but i think the earlier identifiers are more solid. The camera should have near 1000 hours on it. it also has a pelican case it is stored in, the foam is in really bad condition and falling apart. It has one 16gb and one 4 gb p2 card installed. the infrared lens also has a chip out of it. if you find my camera and know its mine please contact me and we could work something out. id just like to know where its at. Thank you for reading my posting.

Here are the serials to the two P2 cards.

this has been filed wiht the carlbad police

im sure we'll all keep our eyes out for it. b'cause thievery is just short of kicking puppies.

but damn dude. the way you describe it AND leaving it in your car overnight?
sounds to me like it was a bit of "camera care karma" going down... what do you shoot mountain climbing or something?
maybe it ran away from home?

im guessing you didnt have insurance?

ya i have a sd sony vx2100, i dont even leave it in the car while i go into stores i bring it with me.

;)

I know i know everyone has said "why did you leave it" . Honestly, this is the FIRST time i have EVER left my gear anywhere other than 5 ft from me. MY luck, someone seemed to be walking through the neighborhood and decided to break into MY vehicle. Weird part is, i live in a REALLY nice neighborhood (i just rent a room in a house ina nice neighborhood) i dont think the houses around me are any cheaper than 900k . I got home the night before at 3 am froma gig. I was nodding off at the wheel so i literally came home and passed out. The one time i do this i get robbed. They took my cam case and another case with misc chargers and threw that one in the neighbors front yard. They also took my ipod go figure... Just the idea of someone having a professional cam like my HVX really pisses me off bc its not like they know how to use it :( I appreciate your support. Thanks for the condolences :( they didnt take my complete rig or any other gear... they also left my car door open... a rested mind is a sharp mind :/

condolences yeah. i had my macbook pro stolen on a set at a long time client a few months ago.
BUT i had insurance. if you didnt have it. i HOPE you use this experience to insure your next camera. i cant think of a better use of $50-$75 a month, if your camera is indeed your living...

What is so weird about that? You think that most houses & cars & people that get robbed are in poor neighborhoods? Haha, rich neighborhoods are where the most stuff goes down when it comes to getting robbed. More to gain. Like HVX's just layin around in people's cars and such.

I feel for you. I know you know the obvious, but a few bucks more a month for insurance for your car or a $20/month renter's/homeowners insurance policy would have made sure you got your gear replaced. Nobody ever thinks they need insurance until something happens.

I will give you a quick story. One night I was at my shop when I used to own a touring production company. It was in a great neighborhood, right in a business park surrounded by the world's largest security company. There is security up the yang there. I happened to be working late and dozed off on the couch for a few and forgot to lock the front door. Wake up and the Laptop on the receptionist desk was gone along with a money bag with a couple hundred bucks in it. That was the only time I had ever not locked the door, and I was there, and sure enough it happened. You just gotta be careful and take the 1 extra minute to make sure your stuff is secure.

Insurance has already been applied to my gear. I guess ive gotten to the point where i have so much gear ($ wise) its a definite requirement. They came and took prints from the car.. but my guess is this camera is going to be a closet piece for someone :( WQZN... can you recommend a good insurance company you like?

I've got about $20,000 grand worth of equipment and edit at home. My homeowner insurance won't cover me (47 bucks a month). I've also had to buy business insurance (210.00 a month).
Of course it covers someone tripping over a cord and strangling themselves as well as getting electrocuted in the process and theft too. I live on a lake and when the af-100 comes out I want to go out on the boat on a windy day and drop both my HVX's (a sad day) in the water and claim some new gear but my wife won't let me. Karma she says.

lesson learned, hopefully thief is dumb enough to try to ebay it or list it otherwise. likely fingerprints will not lead anywhere; its not a big incident to the police. check ebay craigslist etc; im sure you are already on that.

i lucked out a few years back at a fairly dead gas station, i had a little RSX hatch with all the modified goodies, got out to buy smokes, there were a few cars mostly girls, so i left the stereo on to some french electronica from my ipod and left the car, windows down sunroof open music blasting to kind of show off. had ALL my photog gear (prob 10k worth) and about 2 grand cash in a bag on the passenger side of my car (shot 2 baseball teams for side money that day), came back out, i hear country music. some bastards had stolen my ipod, and LEFT ALL THE CAMERA STUFF.

since then i have NEVER left anything of value in a vehicle, and i have it all insured.

i use the hartford and theyre great.

you have a smart wife poco. even making that joke damages your karma. ; )

Kit's story relates very close to mine. Just the wrong move at EXACTLY the wrong time. If i add it up i prolly have around 20k in equip in my house too. You guys are right .... until something happens you dont deem it necessary to insure your gear. I hope this is a mild reminder to anyone who doesnt have their gear insured to GET IT! its def worth it... :/

And I too was very lucky because those were some of the least valuable things in the place. I had over a million dollars of sound, lighting and video gear. Many more computers, HD cameras, but that was wht they could take quickly. It was an old laptop, luckily.

Sorry to hear about your camera.

Make sure to report the serial # to Panasonic service. They will keep record of these things, and it can be tracked if it's sent in for repairs.

I suppose it goes without sayin too, Keep your eye on your local Craigslist...stop by the local Pawn shops, cam shops, etc.

Sorry man!

I've been there, done that....well with the exception of leaving my camera in the car. I ALWAYS take my camera out of the car. I don't care how tired I am. But I have left grip and light equipment in the car overnight at my home. I don't like to do that. Funny thing is the grip and light equipment combined is probably worth more than my devalued hvx.

I hope you get your camera back.

The NYC rule applies everywhere.

Leaving anything in a car is a personalized invitation for someone to take it.

In my case inside of the bag were a well worn wet swimsuit and old pair of goggles,
the rear window was smashed.
