HVX 200a or HPX 170?

The 200A doesn't give a better image than the 170. We have both here, and the images are nearly indistinguishable -- the only differences don't appear to be any more than the differences between two cameras of the same model.

You said 'nearly' indistinguishable. That's different from 'indistinguishable'.

Crazy people go crazy over the huge variance in the word 'nearly'.

Example: I shot a movie on VHS and I swear it nearly looked like film.

:)

I just don't want to be quoted as saying they're identical. No two cameras -- not even cameras of the same model -- deliver exactly identical images. Besides, the footage you see posted has a lot more going into it than just a straight comparison between the cameras. Different users, different setups, different post techniques, different compressions. The only way to decide if one gives you an image you like better than the other is to shoot the same thing side-by-side at identical setups and settings and look at the raw footage. Between the two, there's really no difference worth mentioning.

But, I suppose, "crazy" people may indeed see a chasm. :) But I agree with Barry -- the difference, if there is one, is so slight that the increased functionality of the 170 makes it a no-brainer, unless you need the DV tape mechanism.

Another consideration...

Another consideration...

Thanks again, Barry (and all), for your thoughts. This site really is an incredible resource.

Another consideration in the purchase of the two is that I am constantly seeing job ads for the HVX200(a). This may be because the HPX is a (relative) new kid on the block, or because people trust the one that's been here the longest, who knows. But that is a consideration in purchasing.

Really (to repeat what has been said, if one is jumping from SD to HD,) there is no real need for that tape deck, and the new features do seem very appealing, along with weight and size.

Has anyone experienced job bias with one over the other? (i.e. you have to explain to clients/directors the differences, and make a sell on the HPX?)

I'm pretty much dead set on getting the HPX170. Money is no longer the issue. For sanity's sake, I am going to check out both the HPX170 and HVX200A at a shop. I don't really need the deck and weight will be a concern. I just want to be sure.

There is a slight difference in the images between the two, that's true. The HPX170 has been tuned to be a little sharper, so the coring is, by default, lesser. The HVX200A has a little more coring in the image. But, as David said, we've got both a 200A and 170 and have used them in two-camera stuff on our latest DVD and -- look, there ain't no difference... juice up the coring by +1 to +2 on the 170, match the master pedestal according to the chart in The HVX+HPX Book, and I dare you to see a difference... :)
