HVX 200 vs XL H1 RESOLUTION

Mr. Blonde

RED Advocate
For those of you who may be starting to side with the XL H1 vs the HVX as of late due to the latest resolution chart results, be at ease.....I've had many reports from friends who own XL H1s who have found that the Canon XL H1 in 24f mode resolves just under 600 lines. From my views so far of various res charts, the HVX resolves anywhere from 650-750 depending on the chart. With that being said, who wouldn't want a camera with more res in 24p mode and all the other features the HVX offers over the H1?

It's tough to argue against that, assuming those figures are right. I've got so much time invested into researching and waiting for the HVX, I couldn't even imagine not getting it now. Some clean looking night footage would really put my mind at ease. Jan also teased us with an offer to let us fool around with the greenscreen footage from the music video shoot. That would be a nice little snack to tide me over. Now would be a good time for Tosh to throw us a bone. The dogs are getting fiesty.

is that vertical or horizontal, cause I know the H1 has the HVX beat in horizontal rez.

off topic, which resolution is the human eye more sensetive to: horizontal or vertical?

Please post a link to ANY chart that actually shows the HVX to have more rez in ANY mode... I would love to see it, as would most of us. So far the rez specs have been less than I expected... not bad.... just not as good as I thought. FYI, yet to see one that had the XLH that low...

Vertical I believe. That is why codecs often compress the image horizontally.

Nope, reason for horizontal compression of resolution is interlaced picture.
It's very hard to do any vertical resolution compression with interlaced.

Good point. Maybe that is why they can "get away" with the hoizontal compression.

DVCPROHD 720p is compressed horizontally (960 instead of 1280) and is progressive only, so I still stand by my point in addition to yours. :)

Well, mmm, dvcpro has these legacy limitations and so do designers' brains.
Dvcpro uses dv-codec that was designed over a decade ago...
So far I haven't found any scientific proof that human eye has less resolution horizontally, have you?

Yeah... Internet hear-say! It's as good as fact:grin:

It does seem to be true if you distort a picture though. IMO you can notice the res loss Vertically sooner than hoizontally. Hardly scientific proof though.

I know thatthe Canon Res is better,
But...
What I REALLY care about is the res of HVX 24p1080
V.
Canon's 24f

I hear the Canon 24f = 600
and What is Panny's Res @24p 1080

This may seal the deal for me,

Thank You

The couple rez charts I have seen on DVinfo show the XLH at 650 or more in 24f mode...

Thanks Ash,
and the HVX 24p@1080 ?
What are this res? I looked earlier but wasn't sure it was 1080

Looking at Kaku's test it looks like 625Hx600V progressive at 1080p... Not definitive but many agree with that number. Check out dvinfo.net, lots of info and interpretations there.
