HVX-200 vs. FDR-AX100?

Just curious if anyone has any opinions on the visual quality of the HVX-200 vs. FDR-AX100 for 1080p footage?

Thanks.

The HVX does not do 1080p, only 1080i. I believe there is a workaround where 1080p can be achieved in post but I've never done it.

???
Not true.

Just speaking from the technical specs, the AX100 surpasses the HVX in every way. Well, Panasonic's DVCpro100 is a widely approved codec, The HVX was an awesome camera and depending on what your needs are, might still fit the bill.

If memory serves, I believe he is right. Only progressive scan in 720. Remember, this was one if the first prosumer HD capable cams. I'm pretty sure that is accurate.

It was one of the best a LOOONG time ago, but realistically most prosumer models and even many consumer models will now put it to shame. The resolution, speed, in camera processing, DOF, noise, codec and almost any category you name will be better in the AX100. Its not that the HVX is bad, its that everything has become much better. Most of the time cameras run in 3 year (occasionally 5 year) cycles. That's why you can now buy an F35 which cost $100k when introduced for less than $10k now.

Yep. I bought the HVX200, Redrock Micro system...ect back in 06. I think the whole thing was like 12 grand. It was huge, terribly cumbersome, and by todays standards, not great looking. It was terrible in low light. By the standards of 2006, it was amazing. A groundbreaking camera. It could even overcrank with the Firestore.

It was pretty much the only option back in 06 for smaller companies to make a more "cinematic image" (with the proper adapters).
