HVX 200 SD performance ?

Just a simple question to all the lucky ducks worldwide who already have a HVX 200 in their bag: how does the camera perform in SD 16:9 ? What does it look like compared to lets say the Sony PD 170? With so few HD TV screens out in Germany for instance there is not so much demand for HD yet - of course I also appreciate the possibility to have one camera and two options HD - and SD.
Needless to say I would like to hear if Barry and other comitted testers  had any tests on the SD side as well.

Recording 16:9 SD the HVX200 going to be better than the PD170 definition-wise, because it has 16:9 CCDs rather than 4:3 CCDs. The PD170 has excellent low-light response. I suspect the HVX has more lattitude and more options in terms of gamma curves. And, of course, the PD170 has no progressive scan...

Personally I'd go for the HVX200 for SD, although it's quite a bit more money.

Thanks Alex for the repsonse - I am still somewhat surprised that this question seems to be only of interest in PAL old Europe and still hope for some results in the big tests we are all waiting for.

I'd like to know the smoothest workflow for making a DVD in SD with this camera.
I'd love it to be 16x9 and display correctly.

I have a training video, I am shootimg in may.

pete,
you're not the only one with this question. ever since i started reading these threads, i've wanted to know how the dvcpro50 looked. here is one reply that i got:

Maurice,

Just shot some 50. It looks really good. I think you'll be really pleased. Again, don't use the gain. You might as well forget that that switch is even there unless you're looking for a grainy look. Hope this helps.

It seems to me like this camera is more of a film makers camera than a run of the mill regular camcorder for everyday use. I think with the proper light it can do wonders. Without light, well, you know.

part 2: Even though I got this camera to shoot HD, I wouldn't have a problem of shooting 50 all day long with this cam. Longer shooting times and a great picture. Can't beat it. I had no intention of shooting 50 until now.

now, just to elaborate on that, i was at evs in l.a. last monday and played with the camera for about 45 minutes. i specifically wanted to see dvcpro50 from this camera for myself. all i can say is that the picture from playback on the panny hd monitor in dv50 was just sick. and i mean sick in a very good way. you gotta see it to believe it.
so if you shoot in dv50 to go to dvd, you're gonna ablolutely love the picture.
hope this helps.

oh yeah, almost forgot.
green hornet, the above applies to your question also, about smoothest workflow for dvd in sd.

i'm also one of those people who wants the camera for it's dvcpro50 capability, specifically for pulling keys. yep, a dearth of info on this real world feature. HD is great but i have yet to figure out what i'd use it for. the world is still SD last i checked. dvcpro50 is the hot but neglected step sister of dvcproHD--and the rumor is, she's actually better in bed.

For noise performance, you can see the thread I just posted elsewhere, that compares HVX DV noise against DVX100B noise.

Other pictures (including DV50) will be posted tonight.

YES!
Thanks Barry!

HELLO MAURICE, thanks for this information. It was very helpful although as with any other positive comment on the camera waiting gets mor difficult - but then again, should a real pro not also be a grown up who can wait - as opposed to a let's say 4year old ?

hey pete,
you know what, just don't even listen to the negative comments about this camera anymore. if sd to dvd is what you're most interested in, then you're gonna be more than happy with the result from the hvx in dvcpro50. look at it like this way, if you can't afford the sdx900 (hvx's big brother and about $45,000 outfitted to use) which most of us can't, then the hvx is hands down the best camera in it's price range to get the best sd picture. and as far as the noise issue goes, for the average person watching the dvd, there is none. how do i know this: i've seen the picture on an hd monitor. and if it looks good on an hd monitor it's gonna look reeeaaal good on a regular tv. hope this helps.
ps, as far as the waiting goes, you'll be glad you did.
pss, as far as compared to the pd170, although the pd170 has a very nice picture, it can't hold a candle to the hvx. i've seen both, and my eyes aren't that bad yet.

Hey Maurice, thanks for encouraging me to wait - meanwhile I get ready for my next shooting (in Uganda) with my PD 170 - but glad about the prospect not having to deal with arrogant Sony services etc.
