HVX-200 & FS-100 v3

I have had my HVX-200 & FS-100 for less than a week. I am ingesting both manuals into the data port just above my left ear. I have a couple of questions.

1) In order to get Timecode to progress do I really have to either put a TAPE in the camera or set the TC in camera to FREERUN? (otherwise when I record on the FS-100 it records but TC doesn't budge (FS-100 TC is set to EXT)).

2) Anybody getting realtime playback with RAYLIGHT in Yellow mode in Premiere Pro 2 on a laptop (I have a brand new Centrino Duo, it barely plays Red in realtime let alone with layers)?

3) My FS-100 has, under the DV Formats, P2 & P2 PN. It is SW v3.0.0. The manual that came with the unit says nothing about support for the PN (native) format. Can I now do slo-mo right to the FS-100 without software pull-down.

Thanks
Newbie Anne

1-If running the HVX with no P2 cards, or with full P2 cards, you have to set the FS-100 to generate it's own TC. With no, or full P2 cards, the HVX won't send TC out the Firewire port.

2- Don't use PPro, haven't a clue.

3- VFR is supported on the FS-100 in non-native recording modes (P2 and Quicktime), but NOT in Native record modes (P2pn or QuickTime pn). The FS-100 "at this time" won't record VFR in a Native recording mode.

1) the camera will generate FREERUN TC and send it down the FW pipe with no cards and no tape and with the FS-100 set to EXT TC it will read that TC. I just want the TC to only roll in the viewfinder of the camera when I hit the cameras rec button (without cards or tape). But thanks for your iinsight.

2) It looks like CineForm Aspect HD has better realtime performance in PPro2 and it is easily used in AE7. Anybody have real world experience with this?

3) This is a bit confusing:

Page 12 of Focus Enhancments FS-100 manual part# MANL-1023-08 says, " ** The 720 24PN,25PN and 30PN recordings are supported in version 3.0... The PN modes are not supported as input streams. What the @%#$#&?"

Thanks for any help,
Newbie Anne

1- Free Run TC is not what I want, I don't use it, and I find the HVX doesn't always recognize the FS-100 when the HVX is in Free Run TC mode. Otherwise, with no P2 cards in, the FS-100 has to generate it's own TC. That's how the HVX was made, Focus has no control over that.

2- From what I've read on these posts, and there are many threads about the subject, Raylight and CineForm are both good products. Check this thread:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=688915#post688915

3- " ** The 720 24PN, 25PN, and 30PN recordings are supported in version 3.0. These are generated from the 720 24P/25P/30P as an input. The PN modes are not supported as input streams."

It's pretty clear: The "Native" recording modes are supported in 3.0, and are generated from non-"Native" INPUT streams from the HVX. "Native" modes are not supported as INPUT streams. Where does that INPUT stream come from? The HVX, of course. That means you can't put the HVX in a "Native" mode, as it won't send any signal through the FW cable in "Native" modes.

To get Native mode recording on the FS-100, place the HVX in a non-Native mode. Set the FS-100 to one of the Native modes on the FS-100 itself, P2 pN or QuickTime pN. The FS-100 will generate the Native mode format from the non-Native mode stream.

"Input stream", think about where that Input comes from, Input Stream means the HVX. Maybe could have worded it better, but it is technically acurate. I'm trying to get Focus to redo the whole user manual. In the mean time, I'm about to ship a video guide for the FS-100, as soon as our packaging nightmares clear up.

Thanks BenB for clearing up some incongruous docs. I wonder how the FS-100 is removing the correct frames if the frame-flag meta data isn't being squirted out of FW port. Oh well sounds like it works for you. I'll give it a try.

I'll also try the FS-100 TCG thingy though the HVX freerun mode has been working fine for me.

Thanks
Anne

No one ever said the metadata wasn't there! Don't put words in my mouth. The HVX DOES have the metadata in the non-native stream to strip out the proper frames.

Where did any one ever say that the metadata isn't in the Firewire stream? Nowhere. It is, that is how the FS-100 does it. What I said is, when the HVX is in a Native mode, it does not send a signal through the Firewire port. In a Native mode, the HVX sends NO SIGNAL AT ALL through the Firewire port. No video, nothing.

But in a non-Native mode, it DOES IN FACT send the metadata needed to strip out the extra frames. I'm not telling you what "works for me." I'm telling you technical facts. Please don't inject statements that were never made.

Whoa big fella, don't get your knickers in a twist.

I got the metdata thing from a different and apperantly inflamitorilly incorrect thread.

Au revoir, Anne
