HVX-200 At The LA Marathon

BobDiaz

The Professor
Sunday, March 19 was the LA Marathon where 20,096 people ran and walked the 26.2 mile race. It took me around 8 minutes after the gun was fired befor I could reach the Start Line, but in the area just after the start line where the press stood to take pictures, I spoted someone shooting video with an HVX-200. I pulled out my mini-camera to grab a shot of him, BUT in my rush to grap a picture, it didn't work. :(

It would have been nice if I could have asked him who he was shooting video for, BUT (1) He was busy shooting video and (2) with a wall of runners all around me, stopping was NOT a good idea. Funny how with all the chaos
and people, I was able to spot an HVX. I guess if it's important, you'll see it. :)

rgd's footage was not shot at the starting line.
So there was more than one HVX out there...

Hey Bob,

What was your time? I'm thinking of doing the Disney Marathon next year.

8 Hours 26 Minutes 52 Seconds, I was BIB # 13860.

That put me in at 19,597th place out of 20,111 runners. OK, 19,596 finished before I did, but 514 were slower than I was. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) Given that I'm 53 years old, 55 pounds OVERWEIGHT, and I had a 25 pound backpack with ham radio gear (and other junk), just crossing the finish line was good enough for me.

By the way, in addition to running (walking) the 26.2 miles, I also was one of the ham radio operators providing communications support for the race. Most of the hams were at the mile stations or medical tents providing race communications support.

It took me around 8 months to go from having a tough time doing more than 3 miles to going 26.2+ miles. So, you'll need to slowly build up for the Disney Marathon. If you do it, you are very likely to feel VERY good about what you've done.

Kick ass Bob, you rock! I've had to forego the gym for running since August to strip down to a sickly weight for my feature shoot this fall. Long distance running is really hard stuff and I salute your accomplishment, especially with your added challenges!

Bob, you gotta be kidding me. Making excuses? You hiked 26 miles and carried 80 extra pounds (55 built-in, 25 on your backpack)? That's downright manly! You don't have to make any excuses at all! Heck, I get tired hauling 25 pounds of luggage through the airport, and you went 26 MILES? With 80 extra pounds? Amazing. Bravo, and standing ovation.

I did bring a small camera with me and took a few snaps. Here's one of the few photos of me with one more mile to go.

It is VERY tempting to do this run next year and shoot video from the runners viewpoint. The camera I took with me also shoots low resolution video and the clips turned out better than expected.

By next year I'll have my HVX and 16 GB cards will be out. The big talk will be about the coming 32 GB cards...

Marathon Man!

Bob, you're awesome! You're an inspiration to people like myself, who spend far too much time sitting in front of their computers!

Ummm, like... I'm... doing.... now. :)

Excellent job Bob!

I don't know what you did to train, but the Santa Monica running club is supposed to be a very supportive group for running and training for the marathon. I think they meet every Saturday down at the Santa Monica Pier. Might want to look them up if you want to really get into it.

congratulations again,
