HVX-200 and Spiderman 3

Hey All-

A friend of mine is dressing the set on Spiderman 3.
He told me they were using the HVX-200 for some of Spidey's POV shots yesterday.
Nice!

Michael

Would be cool if it was true. A bit hard to believe considering I heard they are using 4k scans of 35mm film. You might be able to get away with mixing HVX200 and 35mm in lower quality products but with that kind of resolution I find that a bit hard to believe. Are you sure they were using the HVX200 to maybe do tests before they actually shot it?

Not hard to believe at all. They used Pal micro cams for POV shots in Seabiscut, it cut just fine. POV shots tend to be very brief and move alot so the resolution is usually not that criticall.

I'll get more information. I actually know a bunch of people who are working on the movie, including the 1st A.D.... so I figure he should be able to shed a little more light on the situation. I did however already ask if it was being used for behind the scenes... and that was NOT the case.
I'll find out and let you know.
Cheers,
Michael

well Sarlacc i bet you are more excited about the re-re-re-re-release of the ORIGINAL cut's of starwars where you can see your home land of the Sarlacc Pit! hehehe

Even more to the point, a POV shot from Spidey is going to incorporate a lot of extra texture, a creative choice that the DP probably wants. After all, who knows if a Spider's vision has all the resolution of 35mm? I'm guessing not...

I am very happy to hear George has conceded and will finally release the original theatrical release of the triliogy.

I guess he realized how much more money he could make...

Personally, I don't mind the most current version of the special editions (DVD) There are things I downright hate about them (han/greedo shooting, song and dance in ROTJ, giving the sarlacc pit a beak...among others) But there are many changes I like. I actually have NO problems with the SE version of Empire...especially since they removed the horrendous adding of luke screaming like a little girl when he is supposed to martying himself...

I do like being able to have the option to watch either version.

It would be cool to have a "choose your own dvd" where you select which changes you see, and which you keep with the original. It will never happen, but its a nice idea :)

And noooooow, back on topic. Sorry for the threadjack.

Agreed...plus how much post DI will they be adding...what kind of POV shots are they?

Are they swinging POV shots? Cause while I admit the use of the Spidercam is awesome...even I sh*t myself at the site of a 35mm camera literally swinging 30-40ft in air on a cable.

More of the same information really... but I checked with my friend and he
re-confirmed.

Yesterday, on stage 27 at Sony Studios, the second unit team of Spiderman 3 was using the HVX-200 (hand held) as a P.O.V. camera. It was not pre-visual type footage or behind the scenes ect..... the footage was shot FOR THE FILM. It was NOT green/blue screen... it was an actual set.
Whether or not it makes the cut... I have no idea?
Still pretty cool!

If I hear more I'll post what I can.

I'd love to add that to the "who's using the HVX" thread; is there any way you can have a credited on-the-film crew member write to me directly to confirm that that's what they're using it for?

Can you find out if they are doing anything to match the look of the A camera? Or are they shooting everything clean for heavy post effects?

Barry,

I'd be happy to ask.
I don't see why they wouldn't drop you a line with a little official info. It might take a couple days. Naturally I can't guarantee that they'll want to put their name on anything but it seems like a totally harmless information exchange to me.

If you'd like you can private message me your email address and I'll forward it to the man.

Cheers,

M-

I have a feeling they'll layer the HVX footage with some filters in post to stylize the POV shot. It could be infrared or night vision type thing like in Predator.

exactly what I was trying to get at...this movie has the alien symbiote suit in it...lots of possiblities.

The HVX200 is just getting more and more impressive-looking to me. Here I thought it was just nothing to worry about with the RED and everything, but now I think I may save my money and go with an HVX200. I mean, if it's good enough for Munich and Spiderman 3, then it sure as heck is good enough for me!:)
