HVX, 1080i, mini35, zeiss HS lenses!

here are a few stills from our latest feature film, featuring the stuff in the topic technically...

we had a 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm zeiss HS with t1.3

we still had to lit a lot since the p+s takes so much light... and i was very unsatisfied with the achromat on the mini35 although its supposed to be a hard mount it created very ugly side-defocus.. yuck! we had to shoot with aperture 4.0 on the camera so the whole gg was sharp.

well, comments welcome!

ps: pics not cc'ed yet.

How did you like the zeiss HS? Did you use them fully open all the time, especially in that last framegrab?

i liked them ok, we used quite an old set, from the 80s or so.. we almost every time used them from 2.0 upwards, never 1.3.. they were ok but i would not love to take them again, will try other ones... as said those were old HS ones...

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not sure that CC will help those images much. To me, they are noisy, suffer from CA, are soft, and underexposed.

I hope you can eventually post an update that will prove me wrong.

yup, i know. i just added that for example because of that overexposed house in the first shot.

yes, they are noisy, blame the hvx and mini35 which makes the hvx an iso 100 camera. ( i even used bpress, crushed my blacks, turned on bit of detail coring...)

i was using chroma level +3 or so and master ped -7, bpress gamma, detail level +2 or 3 and detail coring +2 something like that... detail coring softened the image a bit, as well as that p+s adapter. we will send that thing back again, because for something around 7k usd you should get a better product.

underexposed, yes, but we were mainly exposing for a darkened theater, so that should be more or less ok i think...

I would be careful shooting 1080 and turning up the coring. Your noise is from boosting your chroma too much and combating that with increased coring will cause the images to be soft. Also, pressing the blacks too much can cause the grain of the GG to show up. Not sure how you were monitoring but only one shot has tack sharp focus, it is REALLY hard to focus anyway and with the coring boosted... it gets impossible with anything but a true HD monitor.

You absolutely cannot use something like the Marshall when shooting 1080 with an adapter and get consistent tack sharp focus.

ash =o)

PS the sweet spot for the HVX as far as sharpness when using ANY adapter is around F4 so you lost nothing there

thanks for the information, i really appreciate such detailed input.

we already decided to light everything so that we can use f4 in the hvx and at least f2 on the zeiss, will turn off coring for sure, boost chroma a bit less (color correction afterwards!), and crush the blacks a bit less...

we used a dell 2407, i dont really know how much of a hd monitor it is, it says that it can do 1920 so i bet that's at least pixel for pixel?

the problem is also that the hvx tends to get soft if there isn't too much light... too bad. well as said we will have a better planned second shooting block starting in about 6 weeks, i will tweak the camera so that we will get much sharper shots, those are too soft for me as well, it hink that it's also the friggin p+s adapter... well, it's good that we've got quite a good connection to moviecam austria (yes it's even an austrian invention!), we're gonna do some testing in their studio these days... will report back with results if you guys are interested!

thanks for now and thanks for the nice words kholi ;)

I like some of the shots a lot! My only comment is on the -7 pedestal and curve. I'd recommend a +7 pedestal using cine V (the more washed out looking one) instead (shooting 1080 24pa). You get cleaner images after CC to create the same effect. Worth the extra storage, and your not so married to the contrast either.
