HVR-Z1 in SD mode

When shooting with the HVR-Z1 in SD mode and 16:9 format will I be using the whole of the CCD chip or just a smaller section of the chip.

Re: HVR-Z1 in SD mode

I assume therefore the quality in SD 16:9 mode on the HVR-Z1 would be better than shooting with a pd170 and cropping the top & bottom to make 16:9 format. Is that a fair assumption?

Re: HVR-Z1 in SD mode

It's real 16:9. I'm not sure what it does to 4:3. I think it has they choice to shoot either one.

Re: HVR-Z1 in SD mode

I just read this:

4:3 Output
The HVR-Z1U offers several features useful for videographers who also need to output 4:3 images. The converted SD output (i.LINKr Output, S-Video Output or Composite Output) can be connected to compatible SD devices. If the monitor is 4:3, "Letter Box" can be selected and if the monitor is 16:9, "Squeeze" can be selected.
Edge Crop at 4:3
Unique to the HVR-Z1U is the "Edge Crop" mode. This mode is ideal for 16:9 shooting and unlike "Letter Box" or "Squeeze," "Edge Crop" can provide a normal picture that will fill a 4:3 screen. For supporting this function, a viewfinder/LCD panel 4:3 safety marker is added by selection in the Marker

Re: HVR-Z1 in SD mode

I'm just guessing, never used a Z1U before. The Z1U can do the same as your stand alone DVD-player does. If the monitor is a 4:3 than it makes letterboxing. If the monitor is 16:9 than the output is 16:9. You can choose what you want to use.

Let me preface this by saying that I've used neither a Z1 nor a PD170, although I have extensive experience with the FX1 and the PD150, and as far as I know there is no imaging difference between the FX1/Z1 and the PD150/PD170 that would invalidate what I say.

Resolution-wise, yes you'd be ahead using the Z1 in 16:9 mode vs. using the PD170's in-camera electronic 16:9. The PD170 does a relatively poor job of converting its image to 16:9 in-camera. However, resolution is only part of the equation; the PD170 will be two to three stops faster than the Z1 (although the Z1 in Hyper-Gain may eliminate some of that advantage). The PD170 will likely provide a sharper image overall on SD than downrezzed or DV-mode Z1 footage, but the native 16:9 of the Z1 may overcome the resizing disadvantage.

So, overall, if you can live with the lower sensitivity of the Z1, you may find its 16:9 image superior to the 16:9 image of a PD170. A PD170 with an anamorphic adapter may produce a better image than the SD Z1 however, and will be about 2.5 stops faster than the Z1.

Re: HVR-Z1 in SD mode

Thanks Barry, I had a short play with the HVR-Z1 yesterday, but unfortunately was unable to shoot any test. The downconverted footage from HDV to DV looked remarkable.

I am sure there is a market for the camera especially for those videographers who need to shoot both SD PAL and NTSC. Like the DVX100 it is front heavy but with the new shoulder pod (not seen) it would be bareable.

The only small problem I could see would be those people shooting 1080 50i in a 60 cycle country (you would get flicker from fluro lighting) whereas those shooting 1080 60i in a 50 cycle country could utilise a small built-in feature called flicker removal. But in an emergency you could also use the shutter setting to remove the fluro flicker.

There is also no clear scan or single frame
