HVR V1U Time Lapse?

Okay so I recently bought the Sony HVR-V1U. I'm primarily an editor so this camera is perfect for my own projects which consist mostly of Documentary work and the such. One thing I'd like to figure out is how to effectively utilize the built in time lapse function in the V1. I tried a few test shots and it came off as just plain jerky. Has anybody had experience with this function and has anyone either:

A. had the same problem

or

B. had it work flawlessly

if so please elaborate. I appreciate your time! :dankk2:

Does the camera provide slower shutter control when using this feature? If you only get 1/50sec at 1sec interval it is not very useful when there is serious motion inside the interval because blur vector is far too small compared to motion vector, in other words, shutter angle is too small.

I have a V1u but I've never done timelapse. What one of my friends did to do some time lapse stuff when the footage seemed jerky to him, was simply videotape about a hour worth of footage regularly without the time lapse function. Then have After Effects to merge the images into a small amount of time, say 3 minutes.
