Human Endeavor - Slimothy

Hi Slimothy, nice work!

The standouts in this piece, for me, was the cinematography (love the use of the fast shutter speed), gore FX (squibs were insane), acting, and the overall sense of desperation and urgency. That scene outside near the middle was just gorgeous, with the sun backlighting everything and dust in the wind. Really great.

By contrast I would've liked to have seen more dynamic indoor lighting - it wasn't bad by any means, but after the beautiful day footage it was a hard act to follow.

The guy eating Fruit Harvest was hilarious. Nice touch. Anyone notice how food and drink play such a huge part in zombie movies?

Girl with no legs - great.

I wasn't thrilled with the ending, although I gotta give originality points for juxtaposing Jesus, puking, and birds.

Again, nice work.

I'll have more specifics for you, and others later Tim, but I have to take a quick second to say that for me, this is one of the top films I've seen so far, and I only have about 6 more left to watch.

The only critique I can think of at the moment, is that the acting/cabin scene lagged a little in the middle. Also, the legless zombie starts to pop a smile just before you cut away from the close up of her face.

Otherwise, any time there was supposed to be drama or action, it was DEAD ON! The music fit supurbly well, and the editing was good as well. Again, I was beyond impressed when I saw this one.

Visually the shot of the guy in the hospital was amazing. Very filmic.

I found the story a bit confusing (news guy, hospital, eating, running, talking at a table, klling a female zombie, etc.) It seemed to jump around a lot, also the color and look varied a bit too much. There was a lack of consistency with the look throughout.

I like the CC in the hospital scene, but I think it could be a little bit more hectic and crazy.

I really like how you use the shutters for the zombie attack. The makeup and Special FX was top notch. Very nicely done.

I wasn't too sure what you're trying to do with the dream sequence, I think if you take that out, the movie will flow better. The ending was ok, i think you could end it better but it's not the worst ending I've seen.

Overall, I think you did pretty good job for your first.

Hey
Just watched it and I thought it was some good stuff. I like that some people made zombies run and be fast movers while some made them quick. For a while I wanted the zombies in my movie to run like napolean dynamite with their arms by their side the whole time. I liked the action scenes and some of the daylight shots were really beautiful. I really liked the ending as well. The beginning was kind of wierd. Half way through I was trying to remember if I was watching the same movie...
Very well done for the most part
Brian

Thanks for the comments guys! I didn't use any computer special fx or squibs, I rigged up a blood blasting machine....It worked pretty good.

Nice use of hand-held (not overdone.)

Actors turned in respectable performances.

You have a good eye, and a fast/clean editing style.

Slimothy,
I was impressed. The shots seemed very purposeful. The acting was pretty good and you put the fx to good use.
You really like the black and red high contrast shots, eh-(even in your avatar)? At first, I wasn't sure if I liked the one red/black clip where they are heading out on the street, but in the end, I think I liked it because it was different and bold.
Most importantly I could follow the story for the most part. It seems that a lot of these zombie films look like they are running out of time in 5 minutes, but you seemed to accomplish enough in the time.
One small negative. You could normalize the sound a little bit. I was cranking my PC speakers to hear the dialogue but then the action scenes made my ears bleed.
Overall, Good job.

LMAO!! That was funny **** man:) I know what you mean....It's the same deal for me on my tv. I was so rushed so some things suffered. Thanks alot for the comments. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I agree w/ the red. I thought I was going to take some **** for that. I just did it and I liked it so I said **** it and kept it. Thanks again. Tim.

I have to say that after watching this flick in excess of 30 times now, I'm kind of getting sick of it. If it was REALLY good, I wouldn't be feeling this way until after maybe 100 viewings.

Seriously though, do you find you're just sick of your own film now? Now if anyone wants to see mine, I just walk away from the computer & let 'em watch it. Kind of like after doing a project for someone that you're editing to a song. After you're done with the project you can't stand the song anymore because you've heard it 100+ times.

I tend to really dislike anything I've done soon after I'm finished with it, because I learned so much in the process I know I could do better if I were to do it again.

That is SOOOO funny you mention that. I had someone over tonite and we were perusing the films and she kept wanting to watch mine again and I fended her off a little bit, but I finally gave in. I'm SOOOOO over watching it over and over again.

This short looked good and had some nice make up effects (lot blood). I agree with Envision in that I thought cabin scene was a bit slow, but in the same sense it was a good break from the action. It would also be nice if the story wasn't constrained to 5 mins then it would flow a lot better not that it was bad, just that it could easily be developed more. Good job.

Thanks so much Alimar, I totally agree w/ you. Cabin scene runs a bit. I agree also that it would be nice if the story was longer than 5 mins!!!:) I think everybody agrees. Thanks for watching and thanks so much for sharing your comments. Tim.

Hey!

I like a lot here. I don't really see the need for the dream sequence and it really bogged it down. The opening was nicely shot, but the hospital sequence was a little long for me.

The effects were really nice. Like the make up and blood effects.

The story did feel like it jumped around a little too much. Maybe tighten it up a little?

Visually I really enjoyed it. Nice job!!!

Good work!

Robert
