Hugo Gaggioni, CTO of Sony Professional Solutions of America presents the technical information covering the attributes and benefits of the new XAVC video compression format established by the Sony Professional Group. Hugo explains how XAVC fits into current production workflows, along with well-established compression formats such as MPEG2, MPEG4 SStP and various camera RAW files.

Thanks for sharing this. I think Sony has done a fabulous job in defining a very flexible system that provides solutions for all sorts of markets. When I first saw the new Fs I thought that they had the right idea enabling all those formats up to RAW, and this presentation shows how well thought out it all is. The ability to stay Long GOP for some broadcast legacy reasons is sensible but XAVCs, the consumer version, not implementing intra hobbles the prosumer section a bit. Although I'm watching this on you tube I was interested in the test showing that the 4K Raw is "visibly identical" to the 4K XAVC. I really want to see some of that natively. Anyway, I'm glad Sony is out there doing this stuff. They seem to have taken into consideration all segments when building their cameras and that can only be good for us and good for them.

Visibly identical is in the eye of the beholder.

I switched all shooting from XAVC to SR 4:4:4 because I started noticing magenta/green chromatic aberration with XAVC that was not present with RAW or SR.

I definitely wouldn't use it for green screen.

Cheers.

Here's a crop with XAVC on the left and SR 4:4:4 on the right:

A bit too much magenta/green chromatic aberration for me with XAVC. I didn't notice it at first, but now I see it all the time.

Cheers.

It's not as noticeable in 4K due to the increased resolution. But the choice between HD 444 and 4K is not entirely clear cut.

Cheers.

Shouldn't Sony be moving over to a h.265 variant now, especially for 4k? I think its the only way forward if we want 422 4k and up, in a file size friendly package. I guess in the next camera release perhaps.

XAVC is now our go to codec with the F55 and no color problems at all. A flick of a button and up to 180fps is a nice feature to make it all happen while on the shoulder.
