Here’s how I did several of the effects in “Stakeout On Tenth Street”.

The flickering cigarette lighter in the building:

The first capture is the actual building shot at magic hour.

The next capture shows a shot taken inside the warehouse during the shoot at that location sized to fit the window opening.

The next capture shows the holdback mask I made to match the window opening. This mask was used to increase and decrease the light coming from the window to produce a flickering effect.

Capture four shows the building with the windows cut out overlaid. Only the area inside the window frames shows through. I made this mask by taking a still frame of the building and cutting out the window frames in Photoshop.

Capture five shows the completed shot, timed and windowboxed.

I lightened the caps a bit so you could see the effects better but they still look darker on my monitor than they do in the video.

The gunshots:

Cap one shows the original frame. Notice all bullet holes are on the actor's shirt.

http://images.mysticcolorlab.com/342576;923232fp3;=ot>2338=633=885=XROQDF>23236;245<:<9ot1lsi

The same frame after touchup in Photoshop. The bullet holes are still there, just under the touchup. I remove the touchup on the frame where I want the hole to appear.

The final shot as it appears in the film.

I worked hard to make the credits appear right out of a 1948 film. I get a real kick out of the second cap - especially the fake Eastern Electric Sound System bug and the disclaimer.

Looks amazing. Very cool. The bullet hole trick in particular I'm going to try. I just watched Double Idemnity and you really captured the noir look quite well. It's nice that it's a genre with a deep DOF, which makes it conducive to video. Blown highlights always look less awful in black and white, too, although I think BW film actually has more dynamic range than color 35mm.

Nice to share, how courageous to do all this work in Photoshop !
Man, i think you should definitely jump to After Effects if you don't already use it.

One of the best posts ever. Seeing the process from start to finish is great. A lot of us would love to be on the set of films being produced. You just allowed us on your set and in your editting room. Thank you, now where's the restroom.

Yeah, I probably use AfterEffects more than Photoshop, but I developed these techniques in Photo and have stuck with it. I also have a bunch of Plugins in Avid that allow me to do some terrific stuff. I'm really more of a storeteller than an effects guy. Most of my effects are used to heighten the realism, not for flash. I love some of the effects-loaded videos other guys produce, but it's just not in my makeup.

so how do you photoshop the holes out then, take that away? Do you have to overlay the coverup?

Greeches,
I just use the cloning tool and the airbrush to eliminate the holes, then import the finished frame back into the Avid. I could do it as an overlay, but the complete frame works just as well and is less work. Each frame has to be touched up due to the changing shadows and wrinkles in the material. My art background seems to give me an advantage in the touch up - other editors I know have not been as successful in this technique. The toughest part of the process is making your touchups consistant so they don't flicker due to variations in shading and color as they change frame by frame.

Re: http://images.mysticcolorlab.com/34257Noir Eff

nice... any idea if there is a way to import a single frame to Premiere pro?

thanks for the brain food!

Re: http://images.mysticcolorlab.com/34257Noir Eff

I'm not much on Premier, but I've got to believe you can import a graphic file into the system - which is all I'm doing in Avid. Avid can handle Photoshop files and jpegs, among others. Just import the graphic file into Premier and cut one frame of it into the timeline to replace the original frame you worked on.

Hey Taylormade... that photoshop bullet hole thing is a classic case of usin the old noodle. As soon as you mentioned it I said "of course" I don't know if I would have thought of that, Clever :D
