Great overview Barry. We'll have two of these on our new reality series this fall. I'm most excited about the U/I on this camera. It is as if someone at the Panasonic design and engineering desk was listening to almost every observation on the HVX200 made here in this forum.
The versatility of the 500 promises, with one device, to open up many more possibilities for those of us who need both 1080 and 720 2/3" solutions for our clients.
Is anyone else as tired of the HVX versus RED conversation as I am? Obviously, RED will offer over twice the resolution, improved colorspace and latitude and also supports variable framerates and so on.
For field work, many television clients will still want standard format recording and deliverables. HDCam/SR, XDCamHD and DVCProHD are the predominant broadcast-compliant formats today.
The pricepoint is significantly different. For $21k, you have HPX500 head, viewfinder, removable solid state memory and a lens.
On RED, $17.5k is body only. When they get done designing the thing, it might well turn out to be a camera suitable for use in ENG situations - it remains to be seen. New renders of RED were introduced less than five days ago... when will this thing deliver? I'm budgeting shows to go into physical production as early as this fall - that leaves RED squarely off the table. Not even in the periphery.
The HPX represents an amazing feature-set with an ever-growing and wide infrastructure behind it. Authorized retailers and service centers are in hundreds of markets around the world. Panasonic is here today - at a pricepoint that other mfgs. can't even come close to.
Consider how many broadcast programs have a legacy in the DVX and HVX and the HPX500 is a logical step forward.
In television, RED versus HPX500 or HVX200 is a debate without merit or substance - two of the cameras exist today in a commercial application, one is still on the bench.
When RED hits the market, you could argue RED versus 35mm and certainly 16mm - I believe RED is going to quickly dominate the commercial and music video market and make a good splash in features.
good points all.. There's security and track record in Panny too... This cam looks so sweet and would be a great A camera to my soon to be HVX B camera.
All the hype too about another cam that isn't shipping... wonder if people remember the hype about that cinevate lens adapter and... the cineporter come to think about it. Wonder if they'll even bother when 16 gig cards are hear and the 32 are imminent... there's something to be said about delivering on time.. or not at all for those older devices
Seeing 4 16gig cards in one camera makes me sick... haha. I think I'm gonna order one, take the 16 gig cards and then return the camera. If that's what it takes to get those cards!
