HPX3700 video noise - screenshot included

Hey all,

I am currently in pre-production on a short film and we are shooting on the 3700. We have just finished a couple of test shoots and I have noticed and am concerned about the video noise in the image. I recently sat down with another director who is in post for a feature film which was shot on the same camera, I did not notice the same issue. I don't have the opportunity to contact him at the moment so I thought i'd ask you guys.

As far as I am aware the settings I know were active were:
- ND filter
- -3db gain

I am new to the camera and so is my DOP. So any advice is appreciated. I know we can get a lot better out of this camera and would love to know suggested settings etc.

One more thing our current workflow with FCP is log and transfer onto a Apple prores 422 (HQ) timeline. I am also worried about this and getting the best possible quality. We have access to AVID as well would this be a better route than FCP?

Here is a shot with noticeable grain, please click the download link to view large version.

Thanks in advance.

Morning!

The 3700 VariCam is quite a different animal than a 300 or 370. This might not be the best place to post your question.

Hey white89er

The Varicam cameras are designed to give you a high range of latitude with the special gamma mode Film-Rec. This gamma mode can be set to get more information out of your highlights, which it seems like you are set to. However you are exposing for the inside of the car and letting the background blow out, so this gamma mode isn't entirely appropriate for this situation. You are experiencing noise in the low lights because you are underexposed inside the car and the gamma mode is pushing up that area. I would suggest setting your Film-Rec dynamic range to 300% or 400% and adjusting exposure appropriately. Or keep your settings the same and just adjust the gamma in post to darken the noisy areas.

Also, FCP 7 supports native AVC-Intra 100 files so there is no need to convert to ProRes for editing. Log & Transfer will rewrap the files into MOV, but not convert them to ProRes. AVID MC 4.0 and above has the same native support.

I am still not convinced FCP works natively with AVC-I-100 !!! The only sequences you can choose to fit the rewrapped MXF files are the prores 422 flavours right ????
