hpx300 shooting from helicopter

I have to shoot some aerial shots from a chopper - low level flying so will be fairly wide. Has anyone shot aerials with this camera ? How did it perform ? I've shot from a plane and it was ok ( apart from the bumpy ride ) but I've never shot anything from a chopper with this camera.

Depends largely on the mount. Vibration + CMOS = potential disaster. Insulate the camera completely from vibration and you might get great sharp results, but if the camera is subject to vibration the jello effect can overwhelm the footage.

Thanks Barry, I should have mentioned that I am shooting off the shoulder so the mount is me, or a perhaps a cinesaddle. I will be shooting 720 50p avc intra with some shutter. Am I asking for trouble ?

Well, 720/50p is the fastest refresh rate with the least amount of rolling shutter complications, and your body will be a pretty effective anti-vibration filter in and of itself... I don't know. If it was me, I wouldn't be shooting helicopter footage from any rolling-shutter camera. However, when I had a Red One, a guy took it up in a tiny little copter and shot with it in his lap, and the results were surprisingly good, so -- it might work out just fine. I'd be quite interested to hear the results, either way.

Thanks for the feedback, I might give it a go with the 300 as my only alternative is an SD Camera so I will shoot with the 300 and use the cinesaddle to absorb the vibration. I'll post the results here.

That just reminded me, yes we had the Red sitting on a cinesaddle... so, yeah, it will probably work. Just isolate yourself from as much vibration as possible.

further update, the camera worked great. I mainly stayed wide and there was no skew in the shots at all. Vibrations were minimal but I'd happily shoot aerials again with this camera.

Great that it worked, appart from delivery time the cmos stuff kind of turned me away from the 300 last spring. I shoot a lot of action sport, some frome heli. The type of heli also has it's impacts...a small Robinson R44 vs. Eurocopter A350, 2 vs 3 rotor had a lot more impact on vibration than I was aware of.

That's great to hear - I was watching this post with great interest - thanks for the update! If you'd care to post some of the footage when you have time (Vimeo, YouTube), that would be much appreciated as well! :)
