HPX250: HPX250 and Firestore FS100 issue - anamorphic recording in DV mode

Maybe I have something set wrong but I get an anamorphic image from the Firestore when recording DV, camera in "Squeeze" mode which is, of course, 16:9 for the HPX as it was on the HVX and the DVX before that???

So, if anybody knows how I can fix this please let me know. (I'm doing a very long SD record, 480/30P, and want to use the Firestore as a back-up to my P2Micro card reader with Class 10 SD cards.) The SD cards make me nervous as I haven't done this before although it seems to work fine.

If there is no solution and the editor has to use the anamorphic Quicktime files from the Firestore, won't that make for long rendering time to unsqueeze the footage?

Any help would be appreciated.

"squeeze" is anamorphic, inherently. Are you saying that the FS100 files aren't being recognized as 16x9 files in your NLE?

I'm not an FCP user so I'll let someone who is, answer that portion. But the recording the camera is doing is a native 16:9, so there should be no pillarboxing going on. It's a 720x480 file with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2:1...

I checked the file properties in Edius, they seem correct for anamorphic SD. It's not DV compliant because the format is progressive, but that shouldn't matter if your NLE interprets the properties correctly.

BTW...there's no good reason to have your setup (black level) set to 7.5...digital is always 0. Shooting DV is also a waste if you ask me. I wouldn't shoot below DV50 if you MUST still shoot SD.

Good thought but on the 250 the recorded signal is still at 0 when camera is set to 7.5%A. "A" is auto I guess??? I'd shoot "50" but quality is less important than small file size! Thanks for input.

If you have input relative to my question, that'd be appreciated.

7.5A means "add setup to the Analog video outputs". It doesn't affect the digital signal at all (so SDI, HDMI, firewire, and onboard recording are all at zero).

Well put. Although on my old DSR-500WS there was a way to accidentally add setup to the recorded signal - don't know what for???

I'm shooting SD today for a corporate client in NC and SD was requested for a Chicago based client for tomorrow but on that one I talked them into HD.

I haven't shot SD since I can remember so it is strange with 2 possible in one week.

The picture looks terrible.

Barry nailed it. Setup 7.5 ONLY for analog out from the camera's analog outputs. This is always confusing to a lot of people.

Again, the thread is not about "set-up" but anamorphic input/playback in FCPX...anybody know why this is happening AND how to fix the issue?

According to THoff, the recording was done properly, so that would indeed point the finger at an FCP import setting issue.

i Haven't used FCP in a while, but I remember highlighting the clip and I think I went to properties and changed the aspect ratio. It was easy. Sometimes software doesn't see the flag for changing the square pixel to horizontal. Or the recording device doesn't set the flag for 16:9. Google to find how to change the picture ratio in FCP.
