What do you gain for the £600 extra?

SDI-HD? you can get that on the HMC if you get a blackmagic box (http://www.dsvideo.tv/blackmagic_2085.php)

Cheaper memory? Nope

Variable Frame Rates? Well, unless you require slow mo without interpreting 60p, where's the gain?

Easier to edit? Transcoding is your friend, anyway my Pentium D can cut AVCHD.

not full raster codec? Insane....

etc.

Why should i get a HPX171 instead of the HMC151

With the £600 difference you could get a stack of memory cards - and/or other equipment. Just saw images from my new 151 on a 40" screen the other day for the first time - I am very impressed with the quality for such a relatively inexpensive cam!

Because some people need the P2 workflow and/or DVCPro25/50/HD. You may not, I know I don't, but some bigger production companies and/or TV shows do need it and what it has to offer.

For some folks it's a second cam to an HPX300 or 500, so not having to mix media/formats is a plus. Some networks approve the use of DVCProHD as an acquisition format, but not AVCHD. Plus, while AVCHD is 1920x1080 and DVCPro is only 1280x1080, the chips of the two cameras only have an effective resolution of 1440x810, so that extra resolution gained from AVCHD isn't that huge of a deal. Plus, for some folks the whole 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 color space really is an issue. You also get the benefit of live streaming from firewire. And some folks really don't have the time to transcode or want to deal with the hassle, especially if you need to turn a project around in only a few days. [edit] There is also the fact that P2 is pretty much fail safe and bullet proof, yet there at a few threads floating around out there about SDHC cards dying at inopportune times. Not something to want to worry about if you're sinking a ton of money elsewhere into a TV show or production.

Be careful not to assume that your needs, wants, and/or desires are the same for everyone else.
