HPX170 vs. RED SCARLET

I was just checking a little bit about the new red scarlet 2/3 cinema..
i noticed that the sensor size is alot smaller than the red one but will that still be a better image than an hvx200 or hpx170? The price of the scarlet isnt too bad as well, although all the extra stuff you need im sure it will add up, but is it worth it over buying an HPX170 + lens adapter + nikon lens??

Let me know, thanks..

Daniel

The HPX170 physically exists, the Scarlet exists on paper, how can you even compare at this point? Until the camera comes out and is ready to be purchased, comparing the two is pointless in my opinion.

I don't know if it is pointless... If you are talking about buying soon it is.. but if you are talking about later this year.. not so pointless.

I don't think it is worth getting the adapter and HPX170... I have an a dapter (and love it) but it is just too tweaky to justify the lower cost verses the scarlet.

I have a feeling that once we start seeing images from the Scarlet.. there will be n other option for a while.

once scarlet does come out - AND becomes readily available, then we can talk. for now - its all on paper.

i contacted the red folks mid last year about delivery of a red one. and they still said that even if i ponied up the full price at that moment, it would be at least 8 months before i got the device in hand.

i wouldnt bet on any of us being able to just go out and buy (and take delivery of) a scarlet for at least the next 18-24 months

What are you going to be doing with it?

You'll be able to get shallower DOF with an HVX/HPX + Letus + Nikon, than you will with the cheapest of the Reds + Red Lenses/the fixed lens. I read that one of the Reds will have a 35mm sensor, and will have a Nikon mount right on it, which sounds amazing, but the brain alone was listed at $7,000.

Also, keep in mind that the Red's sensors, no matter how big they make them, are still CMOS sensors. The problems and issues come along. I've still yet to have seen a high budget, digitally shot film that was shot on Red, or any other CMOS camera. Most high budget digital films (that I know of) are usually shot on the Genesis or the Viper, which are both CCD cameras. The HVX/HPX is a CCD camera, and an amazing one at that for $5,000 out the box (no extras needed to function).

But like everyone has been saying, we've only seen scarlet on paper so far.

Was The new nick cage film not shot on Red ? Knowing ? Im pretty sure there budget was bigger than any i could imagine =]

Okay, here's the thing - how can you possibly answer the question of whether an existing product would match up to a non-existing product? If your answer is "well, I'm not going to be buying before the scarlet's out" then why does the thread exist now? As others have said, let's talk when the actual product's out, because then we'll have something to compare.

Simple answer is: if you need something now, get the best that's out now. If you don't need something, why are you buying it? Wait until you need it, and then buy the best that's available at that time.

Someone please sticky this post!

Red announced they are cancelling NAB this year because the Scarlet prototypes will not be ready.

Big surprise there. At least they are not taking peoples money at the moment.

haha sorry guys about the Dumb question.. personally i dont care too much for all the hype that the red cameras get. I have been pretty set on getting an hpx170 since i heard of it coming out. Ive been using and HVX200 for almost 2 years and love them. However, not knowing **** about the red, my buddy told me to check out the scarlet, so i did and saw the price tag on the site that says its only $3500.. understanding that you cant use a red until you spend a couple more thousand dollars.. i figured it 'might' have potential.. with the nikon mount already on it and all.... but haha i dont pay much attention to red and didnt realize they weren't out yet..
viva la p2

I think we should stop yelling at the poor guy and repeating ourselves. Once the scarlet is out assuming you make features or shorts it will kick ass. I however still thinkthe HVX is better then the scarlet with the stock lens. However the s35 5k should be pretty impressive.
