HPX170 shooting SD and 16:9

I am sure it is but I am going to ask anyways. Is it possible to shoot in SD and 16:9 aspect ratio? If so what are the settings.

Yes, you can do that. Choose DVCPRO50, or DVCPRO, or DV as your recording format, and for "aspect ratio", choose "squeeze".

Thank You Barry. I am always shooting in HD and this will be the first time with my camera to be shooting in SD for the web.

DVCPRO50 is much higher quality. DVCPRO is 25 megabits and 4:1:1 and a compression ratio of 5:1, DVCPRO50 is 50 megabits, 4:2:2 color sampling, and a 3.3:1 compression ratio. It's much less compressed and has twice the color information.

Barry, a while ago I came across this article talking about the HVX/HPX's DVCPRO50 not being "actual" DVCPRO50 like the big shouldercameras since they use other types of senors, and optics. Some state that the differences are big and not comparable, that it even shouldnt be called DVCPRO50. I really don't think it matters?

What do you think about this?

Sounds like utter nonsense to me. The codec is the codec, and the codec in the HPX170 is exactly the same as it is on the HPX3700 or any of their other cameras.

Now, if someone wants to say that the look you'll get out of a 1/3" camera isn't the same as the look you'll get out of a 2/3" camera, well, all I can say to that is "duh". :) But it's absolutely definitely legitimate DVCPRO50.

Barry will correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems the optics and sensors have to do with generating the image, the codec has to do with storing the image. I would think that DVCPro50 is DVCPro50 is DVCPro50, regardless of the camera being used to acquire the image. (I imagine that someone could find a way to hook up a Fisher-Price PixelVision camera in such a way that the image would end up being recorded in DVCPro50; it would be no less "actual" DVCPro50 than a recording coming off a top-of-the-line VariCam.)

(EDIT: Barry got to this first!)

Question for Barry Here. I too have a client that wants me to shoot SD 16X9. They are asking for DVCpro. and for me to be shooting 720x480. The questions I have then for you is 1) Do I set the camera to the Video or Film Option? 2) From the drop down menu do I choose 480i x60i to get the 720 x 480 that they want? 3) I tested putting the aspect ration to squeeze, but it still looks as though it lays black bars over the footage. In other words it still looks like it does in letterbox option. The shoot is not til tuesday so any help would be huge. First time I've had to shoot SD in a long time and first time with this camera.

1) Doesn't matter. That only affects camera functionality, not the kind of footage recorded.

2) Any of the 480s will be the frame size they want; you should probably find out what frame rate they want. If they're expecting "video," with that kind of "live" look, then they'll probably want 60i, but ask.

3) Squeeze is what you want. There will be no bars if you edit in a widescreen timeline.
