HPX170 - P2 card mess. Need help to figure this out

My hpx170 has been flawless. It has about 800 hours on it and it has never let me down. A strange problem just came up - and then it went away.

I recorded 1080 24p footage all day (90min across 4 P2 cards - a series and e series) and when I brought the footage to my computer it had errors and problems. In avid and premiere all the clips have garbled info on them. It comes and goes and does not follow any patterns. When trying to play the clips, both applications (avid and premiere) both crash after a few minutes.

** See the attached photo for a screen shot of the problem **

The thing is, the clips play back fine on the camera, and through the P2 viewer software. The results are the same weather I use the footage straight off the cards or if they are transferred to my computer.

I have used the camera many times after this problem, and everything has been fine. I just want to see if anyone has had a similar experience and if I should send my camera to panasonic to check it out.

The shooting conditions were normal and indoor. P2_video_noise.jpg

I wound up playing the clips out and capturing from SDI to an Avid Adrenaline and the footage looks fine.

Search for "glitch" and you'll find many threads about this.

If the footage is fine on the cards, and you played back from the cards without glitching, then the error occurred when you transferred the cards to the computer. You should use a data-verifying program (like P2CMS) to transfer the footage, to ensure that it gets copied bit-for-bit accurately.

Thanks for your response Barry. I am going to research "glitch" as you suggested. The weird thing is that I also used the camera (with p2 cards in) as a hard drive and imported the footage directly into Avid and Premiere and the same thing was happening. So it happened even before the footage was transferred to the computer. It only happened when the footage was imported into the editing software, not on camera playback or in P2 viewer.

After searching "glitch" it seems that this is a bigger problem than 1% of users. That doesn't include the people who have not written in their own problem. Especially the fact that people are tired of answering questions about it. So let's see what I have come up with from all the threads I just read about.

In my case:
It's a PC, not a mac and It happened even when I did not transfer the footage to the computer (use the camera as a hard-drive - direct import into avid). I also used Internal Hard drives on other tests. So I am unique. LUCKY ME!

In other cases:
It can happen on a mac when the card protection is off (But somebody also said it happened when the card protection is on)
It can happen when you don't use P2CMS (But somebody also said it still happened when they used P2CMS)
There was also something about dirty terminals (blow it out with compressed air), but that theory was shot down.

So for every "fix" is someone else who comes along and it still happened to them.

So there isn't a "fix", just some things to do and hope for the best.

If anyone reads this, remember that you can always send your footage out and capture it the old fashioned way.
