hpx170 owners: how much better is your hpx170 than the hvx200/200a?

But also saw the AF100 being better utilized as an ENG camera using a Bebob or Varizoom controller w/ the 14-140mm lens....One thing's for sure...I will definitely be picking up a GH2!
I've got the Bebob and 14-140, and it still isn't comparable to the HMC150 as far as ENG usability. The AF100 is fantastic for what it's for, but when you push it into a usage that's not what it's designed for, it's going to struggle. I wouldn't really want to be shooting sports on an AF100, for example. The shallow DOF can be beautiful in controlled scenarios, but it's just undeniably more difficult to work with in uncontrolled scenarios. The 1/3" chips of the HMC150 give you a dramatically deeper margin of error to know that you will definitely get the shot in focus.

Hi Barry and Masters

i have $7000 to spend on my next video camera, i own a lovely DVX 100A, but it is time to go HD, i have been reading almost everithing in your threads, but im not really shure about anything. jijijiji

can you help me.

the primerly use for the new camera it is music videos, and maybe shorts, but i think in using it to ordinary camera al well.

im been looking for a direct comparision on HPX170, AF100, Sony EX and anything in that price range

thinking in full 1920X1080, better image, lenses, accesories, usability, workflow, sorry i kwno it is difficult and maybe a bit subjetive in some points but i really need your opinion to decide.

Thanks and
Sorry about my english.

If you already have a DVX and know how it works, and you want to make HD cinematic footage for music videos and shorts, I'd say the AF100 is pretty much exactly what you should be looking at.

thanks Barry, can you tell me if i can go around with the AF100 a the 14-140 to shoot people and buildings, like i have been doing whith the 100A

Of course you can. It won't be quite as smooth zooming, and the autofocus will struggle a bit since it's shallower DOF, but if you use the 14-140 you'll feel pretty much right at home.

thanks Barry
this is very important for me, some friends tall me that the Sony HXR-NX5U have better image quality than AF100

That Sony looks to be pretty much the exact same camera as an HPX170 with Sony's Name and the loss of Panasonic features.
-three 1/3 inch CMOS (I would prefer CCD's in a 1/3")
-10 bit 4:2:2 to AVCHD (I'd Prefer the DVCPROHD from the 170)
-No Waveform Monitor/Vectorscope
-No Variable Frame Rates
-HDSDI and HDMI (170 is HD-SDI only)
Oh wait it does have built in GPS for geocaching!!!!! YAY your clients will be thrilled!

IMO this camcorder doesn't hold a candle to the HPX170, and would hardly be the camera in Sony's lineup that I would compare to the AF100 (even if they are at similar price points). You should be comparing the Af100 to the new camera they are making the F3, or at least an EX3.

FWIW,
I love my HPX, was considering selling (a couple of times) and going a different route like AVCHD, but every time I do that, I will get a project that calls for it's strengths and come back appreciating its qualities; Low light capabilities and the P2 system, (albeit more expensive than SD Cards), Controls, image tools, sturdiness, size, outputs, etc -can't beat it. With the exception of having to use a P2 Store as an adapter on my computer -all is well.

Although the LCD is better, one thing I did for that rig was get a good field monitor (TVLogic 56w) and wow, makes shooting and monitoring SO much easier.

I can't give you a side-by-side comparison of the HMC150 or NX5u, but I've used both separately and found the controls and menu awkward on the Sony (but hey, I've been using Panny cams since the DVX came out). The HMC was comfortable and familiar. I have yet to lay hands on an AF100 but we're going to be borrowing one and testing it out.
So to sum up my meandering comments, I love my HPX and think is a great camera for what it is.
