HPX170 NTSC DV better than PAL

i have a pal HPX (switchable pal/ntsc). i did some testing in DV mode comparing pal DV & ntsc DV. exact same settings. the NTSC footage is brighter. and the red are terrible on the Pal footage (look on the right), and perfect with NTSC. As pal is 4:2:0 i thought i would get a better image with it. Can someone give me an explanation?

4:2:0 is the same as 4:1:1, except that it treats the color sampling with a different pattern. This could account for the color shifts as well, but since the area being sampled is the same the results could change depending on the scene in question. I don't think the algorithm itself should have different results from the same input, though I might be wrong on that one. It just chose to sample different sections.

Can't explain why it would be different brightness, though. That doesn't seem right.

You sure the settings are identical? No variation in shutter speed? Because shutter speed that isn't in degrees at 24p is a bit different than 25p. For example, 1/1000 of 24p isnt the same at 1/1000 of 25p, but 180 degrees is 180 degrees regardless of the frame rate...

You shot in DV25 right?

Well, I don't have a PAL/NTSC switchable camera to test on, but my gut reaction is to point out that one shoots 24p and one shoots 25p. By nature of the duration of the frames shot per second, the 24p will have more time, albeit brief, to expose a frame. Maybe thats why the PAL is a bit darker.
