Hi again,
I've seen some posts about istopmotion here, but nothing in detail-
I'm contemplating getting an HPX170 and would love it if it could capture stills directly to my laptop for IstopMotion on the mac.
I seem to remember that an old HVX200 I messed around years ago didn't play well with IstopMotion via Firewire. I think it outputted a fairly muddy image. I am wondering if anyone got better HD results from this setup.
I also know that the HPX170 has HD SDI out, so technically if I got a capture card or something like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/766049-REG/Blackmagic_Design_BDLKULSR3D_UltraStudio_3D.html That maybe that would yield better results.
That device is rumored to retail for 1k and that pricepoint, I might as well just buy a DSLR camera as my stop motion camera of choice. However, I'd love to know that the HPX170 can handle istopmotion for the time being.
The only other problem is that I was going to transition away from my macbook pro and get a Mac Desktop + Macbook Air. And the Macbook Air only has thunderbolt and USB. And from what I gather, USB cannot be used to communicate with the HPX170 and IStopMotion. I was hoping using a USB hard drive with a firewire out on it would be a way to bridge the gap, but iStopMotion tells me that won't work.
In an ideal world, the HPX170 would be able to be my video workhorse for shoots, but also do a respectable job at capturing stills for stop motion work, at least until I can buy a DSLR too.
