HPX170: Is Side Crop really 4x3?

Hi,

I just bought a 170 and need to do e-commerce videos of jewelry on a turntable and the final video will be 4x3. Is "Side Crop" 4x3 or is it just affecting the viewfinder display as 4x3 "safe"? I had assumed I'd have to shoot 16x9 and whack off the sides in post but this would be GREAT if I could truly shoot in 4x3.

Thanks!

Ned

P.S. Also, I was thinking of shooting 1080/60 for the sharpest image, having never used the 170. Any idea as to settings or scene files? The final will be to provide a QT to client who will make a Flash for Flikz hosting service.

It's only affecting the downconverted output. If you want 4x3, you have to shoot in standard-definition mode. All HD shooting is in 16x9.

My hpx is set to 720p/60 but side crop is selected and blued out. Is this right? I don't understand why in HD side crop would be selected and unchangeable? Any help?

Please correct me if I am wrong since I don't own an HPX170. But, blued out should mean it is disabled. 720p/60 is HD. HD is 16:9. Therefore side crop (SD) would be disabled.
Jim
